The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, a cornerstone of Whiskey Row’s renaissance in Downtown Louisville, filled the 1,000th barrel on February 1, 2018. The artisanal distillery reached this milestone after producing one barrel per day since production began in September 2013, compared to the 1,300 barrels produced per day at Heaven Hill Distillery’s Bernheim Facility. The multi-million dollar artisanal distillery, immersive tour experience and retail location celebrates the legacy of Evan Williams, Kentucky’s first distiller, and is the first official stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

As the first distillery to re-open on Whiskey Row, the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience celebrates the heritage and craft of American Whiskey distilling in Louisville.  “When the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience opened in 2013, a unique, innovative experience was created where Bourbon fans, historians, and visitors alike could enjoy our nation’s spirit,” said Heaven Hill President Max L. Shapira. “We are proud to celebrate filling 1,000 barrels at our artisanal distillery with the City of Louisville and look forward to sharing product from the first barrels when they mature.”

“Figaro! Figaro! Figaro!”

Even if you haven’t seen it live, you already know its famous music from cartoons and contemporary culture. The Kentucky Opera concludes its 2017-2018 season with the Barber of Seville.  Determined to win the heart of the beautiful and feisty Rosina, Count Almaviva enlists the help of Figaro, the intrepid barber of Seville, to steal her away from her curmudgeonly guardian, who wants to marry her himself!
The clever barber instigates a barrage of merry misunderstandings, dubious disguises, and double-crossings galore to ensure that true love triumphs after all!

The opera will be performed in Italian with English supertitles

We must make certain that our neighborhoods, institutions, businesses, systems and each individual has the capacity to survive, adapt, grow, and thrive no matter what kind of challenges are experienced now and in the future. To ensure we achieve this, we must first understand how our community is performing now and what issues matter most to Louisvillians. $5 February Returns for Four “Museum Row” Attractions

Frazier History Museum, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, the Muhammad Ali Center, and the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts to offer $5 deals for locals

The Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Frazier History Museum, and the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts – all partners in downtown Louisville’s Museum Row on Main -- are teaming up to offer $5 deals for Kentucky and Indiana residents throughout February. The Ali Center, Slugger, and Frazier museums will be offering $5 admission rates to locals throughout the month, and patrons of the Kentucky Center’s SCENE at the Center will receive a $5 off restaurant orders of $50 or more.

Frazier History Museum:  The Frazier History Museum is where the world meets Kentucky and in February it’s through outstanding exhibits and exciting programs. Family Gathering: Linda Bruckheimer’s Kentucky celebrates the beautiful, heartbreaking, sometimes funny and always authentic photography of acclaimed photographer and native Kentuckian, Linda Bruckheimer. The Lewis & Clark Experience takes guests on an immersive and educational journey with the Corp of Discovery.  A Valentine’s Day themed Second Saturday program on February 10th tackles candy, cards and other crazy Feb’ 14 traditions and on February 23rd our 25,000 Toy Soldiers come alive with a curated conversation and cocktail event celebrating W.Britain’s 125 years in the Toy Soldier business.

Muhammad Ali Center: In January, the Ali Center began major renovations on its Lobby and Retail Store, both of which will provide the Center the opportunity to deliver a better overall visitor experience and more contemporary private event space. Additionally, the much needed upgrades will offer a fresh and modern appearance to its retail store, while also supplying better functionality. A major part of the overall improvements will be a custom designed terrazzo floor in the Main Lobby, which will present a striking and welcoming impression upon entering the Center, and providing better durability for this high traffic area. During this estimated 3-month renovation period, guests must enter and exit the Center at the street-level Group Entrance. Visitors will still have access to the Center’s award-winning exhibits and can still expect an excellent museum experience during Black History Month and beyond.

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory: February marks the final month of Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory’s exhibit, Ali & Aaron: United in The Fight. Muhammad Ali and Hank Aaron were both titans of the American sports scene, and have much in common as heroes who endured racism and faced down challenges with conviction. The original art installation explores the historic role both played in the fight for civil rights, and inspires guests to examine their own convictions and beliefs.

All three attractions are also members of Museum Row on Main, which offers seven exciting attractions within four blocks of Downtown Louisville’s historic Main Street. In addition to the $5 February promotion, Museum Row on Main partners offer $1 off admission to guests who show a ticket stub from another member museum that charges admission. A deeply discounted combo admission called The Main Ticket is also available. For more information about the Main Ticket, click here or to purchase your package, click here.

The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts: Before enjoying a performance at The Kentucky Center, celebrate the culinary arts at SCENE at the Center!  The Kentucky Center’s small plates eatery offers bar and food service two hours prior to most performances in Whitney Hall and the Bomhard Theater. Throughout February, just mention “Museum Row on Main” and receive $5 off orders of $50 or more.  Take a look at SCENE’s menu here.

City's External Agency Fund Applications Open

Grants available to social services and arts and creative industry organizations

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 5, 2018)Louisville Metro Government will begin accepting applications for External Agency Fund grants Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 8 a.m. for the service period of FY19 (July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019). These General Fund grants are awarded to non-profit, non-governmental, or "external”, agencies that contribute to the city's cultural, social and economic vitality.

All agencies wishing to submit an application are required to have at least one representative participate in a mandatory application orientation.  The mandatory orientation is available on the External Agency Fund (EAF) website at https://louisvilleky.gov/government/external-agency-fund, and will provide information about the deadlines, how to access the application and general information about the application.

The grants are available for Social Services programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS), and for Arts and Creative Industries programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Department of Economic Development. The External Agency Fund grants are awarded annually to non-profit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson County that align with the Mayor's and departments' strategic goals.

Applications will be reviewed by two External Agency Fund panels, which include Metro Council members and community members. Recommendations will be included in Mayor Fischer’s Recommended FY19 Metro budget, available in late spring.

For the Social Services funding program, qualified non-profits committed to providing services that achieve meaningful outcomes for Louisville citizens in the following key areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Decreasing homelessness
  • Increasing household financial stability
  • Increasing youth, teen, and/or young adult engagement in quality programming; or
  • Increasing access to services and resources for a targeted population.

For the Arts and Creative Industries funding program, non-profits committed to providing arts and cultural attractions and opportunities to the Louisville community are encouraged to apply. Eligible arts and creative industries organizations should demonstrate how a program supports the following primary focus areas of Mayor Fischer's Strategic Plan:

  • Economic development initiatives related to arts and creative industries
  • Creative place making and arts-based programs in neighborhoods that have experienced disinvestment
  • Opportunities for citizens to access and engage with visual, performing and other arts experiences

Louisville Metro Government employs a competitive granting strategy and strives to award funding to agencies that demonstrate measurable positive impact in the community and are good stewards of taxpayer dollars. Successful grantees will be required to report their success in meeting goals and outcomes.

The deadline to submit an application is Friday, February 9, 2018 by 5 p.m.

For more information about EAF, and to access the application orientation, visit https://louisvilleky.gov/government/external-agency-fund. Please submit all questions to EAF@louisvilleky.gov.

Public Health and Wellness Offering Free Class Series to Prevent Diabetes

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness will sponsor a free 16-week class series, PreventT2, to help people prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Classes begin on Friday, January 19 at 11:30 a.m. and will be held for one hour each Friday at the South Louisville Community Center at 2911 Taylor Boulevard from January 19 until May 4. For more information or to enroll, call (502) 574-6663 or email andrea.doughty@louisvilleky.gov.

PreventT2 is designed to help people with prediabetes make relatively small lifestyle changes that can prevent or delay the onset of full-blown Type 2 diabetes and its devastating health consequences such as heart disease, kidney failure, stroke and blindness. It is estimated that one out three people in the United States has prediabetes and ninety percent of them don’t know they have it.

Those most at risk for prediabetes include those who:

  • are age 45 or older
  • are overweight
  • have a family history of Type 2 diabetes
  • get little physical activity
  • have had gestational diabetes
