District 10 eventsJanuary 20 - Louisville Zoo - Qannik the polar bear's birthday party![]() January 20, beginning at 11:15 a.m. at Glacier Run, sing Happy Birthday to Qannik the polar bear, who is now seven years old. Watch as Qannik celebrates her birthday with cake and special birthday enrichment toys. (That is Qannik's baby picture in our newsletter header - polar bears appear darker when they're young). Qannik was rescued from the wild after being found on Alaska’s North Slope in 2011, separated from her mother and sibling. Her exact birthdate is unknown but officials from the USFWS assigned January 10 as her birthday. Each year the Zoo celebrates on the Saturday closest to that date, but the party was moved from the 13th to the 20th since people don't enjoy snow and ice as much as polar bears do. Sidewalk salt can reach our waterways - consider using kitty litter instead![]() When it rains or snows, all the stormwater has to go somewhere. First, the stormwater runoff makes its way into drainage swales, channels, storm drains and pipes that carry it away from our homes and businesses. Then it flows into creeks and streams, and eventually into the Ohio River. Along its journey, stormwater accumulates things like sidewalk salt, which can harm our waterways. Consider using clay, non-clumping kitty litter on your icy sidewalks instead of salt. Public Health and Wellness offering free radon test kits

The grants are available for Social Services programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS), and for Arts and Creative Industries programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Department of Economic Development. The External Agency Fund grants are awarded annually to non-profit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson County that align with the Mayor's and departments' strategic goals. Applications will be reviewed by two External Agency Fund panels, which include Metro Council members and community members.
