District 8 Streets Report: Bus Fare

In this space, we provide updates on major projects and report on upcoming (scheduled and funded) streets and other infrastructure improvements.

Hard work pays off.  In this case, these District 8 volunteers’ hard work back in April has paid off in the form of $34,648.89 awarded by TARC (to be matched by $8,662.22 in District 8 Capital Infrastructure Funding) to implement Phase I of the District 8 Sidewalk Accessibility Improvement Plan!  This will allow us next spring to replace an additional 735 feet of sidewalk along the routes to seven of District 8’s busiest bus stops, making them safer and easier for people of all ages and abilities to navigate – and it essentially doubles the District 8 FY 2018 Sidewalk Repair Plan, which has already been completed.  See Phase I “before” photos and other details here.   Phase I comprises 18.67% of the District 8 Sidewalk Accessibility Improvement Plan, and I’m hopeful that Phase II (to be funded by FY 2019 general fund and District 8 discretionary dollars) gets us to 60%.  This is part of our strategic objective to Improve Equitable Access to the Built Environment. 

We’re partnering with TARC in other ways, as well.  As a result of the Bus Stop Audit we completed this summer, TARC is providing 58.54% of the cost ($34,278.10) to relocate and replace the bus shelter and install a curb extension (including another 225 feet of sidewalk!) at the Douglass Loop (CIF will pay the $24,278.10 balance); bus stops will be improved along Barret and Castlewood Avenues and at Baxter Avenue and Broadway; bus stops along Grinstead Drive near Bardstown Road have been relocated; and all bus stop signs in District 8 that were damaged have been replaced. 

Finally, at my request, TARC and PARC reported to the Metro Council Sustainability and Public Works Committee (on which I serve) on December 5 regarding the possibility of synergies to improve services, reduce costs and partnerships they may be able to pursue.  You can read their report and watch video of the meeting here.    This conversation is not over.  In fact, it continues later this week on Eight More Miles: the Louisville Metro Council District 8 Podcast; my guests are 8664’s J.C. District 8 Development Report: Planet Parking

Over the Last Two Weeks:

On December 18, the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BOZA) recommended approval of a Variance to allow a structure to encroach into the required Moyle Hill Road street side yard setback for a new garage at 2167 Millvale Road. 17VARIANCE1098

Over the Next MONTH:

On December 21 at 1:00 pm, the Planning Commission will hold a public meeting to review a proposed parking waiver to allow a 40% reduction of the required on-site parking spaces at 2232 Bardstown Rd. The meeting will be held at 514 West Liberty Street. 17PARK1011

District 8 Crime Report: Be Safe this Holiday Season

New to the Crime Report this week – but here to stay going forward – is a link to LMPD’s most recent CompStat Data for District 8.  More accurately, the data is for LMPD 5th Division Beats 2 (“512”), 3 (“513”) and 4 (“514”), which divide and cover District 8 according to this map.

For the average reader, this provides an easy look at the amount of crime and what types have been reported in the beat where you live or work compared to last year.  For example, you can see that as of December 9 total crime is down 18.9% in Beat 2, down 28.9% in Beat 3 and the exact same year-over-year in Beat 4.  This is generally very good news but there are still “data points” – such as the three robberies described below – to be concerned about, and LMPD (with our full support) is continuously working to solve these crimes, prevent others and keep District 8 safe.

8 Shout-Outs: The Grateful 8th
