Dear readers, this is the final edition of
District 8 eNews for 2017. We’ll be back
January 16 to report on my 2018 Metro Council committee assignments, update you
on our Year 1 performance
audit, preview the District 8 Strategic Plan for the new year and more. We’ll also experiment with the newsletter
format and try out some new features – such as the handsome “Please share
District 8 eNews!” widget located just to the left there on our masthead.
If you’ve enjoyed reading me this year, please
take a moment now to click the icon and send a free subscription of District 8
eNews to a friend or neighbor who might benefit from the information and not recoil
at the awful puns; it’s like an e-stocking stuffer for the civically-minded. Thank you!
2018 promises to be an interesting, challenging
and political year, locally, beginning with the state pension crisis – which will
negatively affect Metro Government in every way, from workforce retention (including
at LMPD) to capital project funding (due to $38 million in increased costs) –
and ending at the ballot box, with both the Mayor’s Office and half the Metro
Council (odd-numbered districts) up for grabs.
Not to be a Negative Noel this Christmas season but
we still have a long way to go on homelessness, hunger, poverty, addiction,
violence, sickness, segregation, public education, air service, deferred
maintenance of critical infrastructure and auto-dependence (and a partridge in
a pear tree) in our community, as well, so I invite you to join me in returning
our thoughts and redoubling our efforts toward these things as we turn the
calendar to the coming year. You can
make a difference in our city and in our district (as illustrated in the
Streets Report below) by sharing your time, talent or treasure as part of the
District 8 team. As you consider New
Year’s resolutions, consider getting involved in your neighborhood association, volunteering to help us achieve one or more of our strategic plan objectives or engaging in the #Bethe1
Safe & Healthy Neighborhoods program.
We need Everyone. Happy holidays to you and yours.
