The Subsidy Phase of LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program,runs Nov. 6 through Dec. 15. Applicants must be Jefferson County residents within 130% of the federal poverty guidelines.

Note: The early registration for elderly and disabled residents continues through Oct. 31st.  Eligible residents who missed this pre-registration time period may also apply during the regular Subsidy Phase.

Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or putting them out in reusable or compostable containers for curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at one of three drop-off sites beginning November 7.

Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service November 7 through December 2. Drop-off will not be available on November 23 and 24 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

LG&E and KU is excited to announce our Tree Planting grant programs are now entirely digital!

Plant for the Planet Grant applications will be accepted through our new online grant portal from Nov. 1 through Dec. 1. All applications and corresponding documentation must be submitted electronically through the portal. Paper applications will no longer be accepted.

Our Plant for the Planet program is modeled after the United Nations Environment Program's (UNEP) Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign. The purpose of UNEP's tree-planting effort is to bring individuals, communities and businesses together to collectively plant over one billion trees worldwide each year. Similarly, LG&E and KU's program is designed to encourage nonprofit organizations and local government agencies with a record of successful tree planting to continue their efforts. The company has designated up to $75,000 each year toward this initiative.

LG&E and KU offer one-year grants of $500 to $5000 for urban, suburban or rural projects in forests and parks, along parkways or roadways that meet program objectives. Applicants must demonstrate that mature trees resulting from their efforts will not interfere with utility lines

Food take-out containers have been added to the list of items that Louisville residents can dispose of in their curbside recycling carts. That includes packaging from burgers, chicken, pizza, tacos and other to-go containers as well as drink cups.

Metro Public Works is partnering with the Foodservice Packaging Institute to educate residents on the initiative. The FPI is providing up to $10,000 to fund a recycling outreach campaign. The wider curbside recycling is available to over 84,000 households in the city’s Urban Service District served by Public Works.

Tails on Trails Hike Series #4 

Join us for our new "Tails on Trails" Adopt-a-Dog hike series as we aim to help adoptable dogs find a forever home. Each hike will be lead by our experienced Volunteers along with Louisville Metro Animal Services Staff and some adoptable dogs, and include an introduction to the Jefferson Memorial Forest and Metro Parks Natural Areas, then Louisville Metro Animal Services Staff. Hikes will be easy to moderate pace with a few stops along the way to interact and catch our breaths. Feeding Stray Cats?  Alley Cat Advocates can help get outdoor cats fixed and vaccinated at NO COST TO YOU!  

 Cat Caretakers living in the following Jefferson County zip codes 40208, 40209, 40213, 40214, 40215, 40216, 40217, 40219, 40258 and 40272 are eligible  for spay/neuter services for unowned community cats,  They will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, treated for flea and ear-mite medicine, given a great vet visit, ear-tipped (the universal symbol of a neutered cat) and returned.

When there are no more kittens; the number of cats gradually goes down  and annoying behaviors such as yowling, fighting, spraying stop.
