Blues in the Schools Returns

Last year, Garvin Gates Blues Festival launched a new music education program called 'Blues In The Schools.' This music program specifically focuses on the blues genre and aims to educate elementary school students. This year, musician Big Poppa Stampley will present Louisville Blues in four different Jefferson County Public Schools. The program will look back at performers and blues music that have Louisville roots or influences.

Blues In The School Schedule:

Blues For Youth is on Saturday, October 14 on the Four Roses Stage at Garvin Gate Blues Festival. This program is sponsored by Garvin Gate Blues Festival, Facilities Management Services, Down In The Alley Records, Kentuckiana Blues Society, with support from Alley Theater Caravan, Guitar Emporium, Mom's Music.

15301 Dixie Highway - Notice of Action on Title V Construction Permit

The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (District) proposes to issue a construction permit to Kosmos Cement Company (Portland cement production plant), 15301 Dixie Highway, in accordance with Regulation 2.03. The construction project is to install an Activated Carbon Injection (ACI) System on the kiln. The 30-day public comment period starts September 30, 2017, and ends on October 30, 2017. A public hearing may be scheduled if the District determines that there are germane, unresolved issues or substantial public interest, in accordance with Regulation 2.07.

            Drafts of the permit and summary are available at the District office, 701 W. Ormsby Avenue, Suite 303, Louisville, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, by calling Paul Aud at (502) 574-6000, emailing airpermits@louisvilleky.gov, or at the following website: http://www.louisvilleky.gov/APCD/docket. Protect Your Identity after the Equifax Breach

On September 7, 2017, Equifax, one of the largest consumer credit agencies, announced that a data breach took place mid-May through July of this year, potentially affecting 143 million U.S. consumers. The data breach included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, and in some cases, credit card numbers. 

Was your information included in the breach? Equifax has published a web page for you to find out: https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. They have also extended identity protection to those involved. However, although Equifax is agreeing to monitor your credit, they are not offering any services to remedy or restore your identity or credit.

Here are specific steps to consider if you’re impacted by the Equifax Breach, many of which are good practices for anyone:

• Check your credit reports — for free — by visiting annualcreditreport.com: Accounts or activity that you don’t recognize could indicate identity theft. Visit IdentityTheft.gov to find out what to do.

• Place a fraud alert on your credit file: Once you place a fraud alert on your credit file with one bureau, they will alert the other two.

• Place authentication features on financial accounts: Ask your bank to put account passwords or pins that would be required to complete any transactions on your accounts. Often fraudsters will call financial institutions to try to wire transfer funds, order new cards or change your address.

• DMV alerts: Next time you visit DMV, you can ask if they can place a fraud alert on your driving record.

• Set up an account at ssa.gov/myaccount: Setting up an account with the Social Security Administration allows you to monitor your annual earnings to ensure a fraudster is not using your SSN for employment purposes. Setting up the account also ensures a fraudster doesn’t set up the account to gain further access to your information.

Security Freeze: Placing a Security Freeze with the credit bureaus locks your credit, making it inaccessible to creditors. When you place a Security Freeze, the bureaus will send you a confirmation pin number that will be used to lift your freeze. We recommend only lifting the freeze temporarily when you need to use your credit. You can remove the freeze on the credit bureaus’ websites.

• File an IRS Affidavit: Alert the IRS of your compromised information by filling out the IRS Affidavit.

• Chex Systems Alerts: You can place an alert with chexsystems.com to alert banks and financial institutions of your compromised information. This will help keep fraudsters from opening bank accounts in your name.

• Change all your passwords regularly: Smart account management should include complex passwords that are changed regularly. Consider making your passwords on any financial accounts different than your email passwords, and make them as intricate as possible by including letters, numbers and symbols. Place authentication features such as passwords and pins that are required to complete such actions as address changes, account updates, wire transfers or ordering new cards.

• Beware of phishing emails: Once fraudsters gather identifying information, they usually send official-looking texts, emails or phone calls to gather more data. If you click on a link or respond to a text from an unfamiliar source, it may allow the fraudster to implant malware or viruses on your phone or computer. Never click on any links in emails or respond to unknown senders of text messages. If you receive something of concern that looks official, go to that business’s secure website to get the correct phone numbers to call and inquire about messages you have received.

• Beware of phone scams: If you receive a call from a bill collector or other source soliciting you for money on a past due bill, you need to validate the debt. A recent scam involved fraudsters pretending to be the IRS and collecting thousands of dollars from victims that had their personal data compromised. Always confirm debts with creditors directly and remember that most of the time you should receive a letter in the mail before a phone call.

Louisville is losing a hundred and fifty trees a day. Trees have provided cooling shade for our city, improved air quality, reduced heating & cooling costs, and improved property values. Yet over the past decade, Louisville has lost over six hundred thousand, holding Louisville's ambitions back. It doesn't have to be this way. Approximately​ ​70%​ ​of​ ​available​ ​space​ ​for​ ​tree planting​ ​is​ ​privately​ ​owned,​ ​which​ ​means​ ​that​ ​you ​can​ ​play​ ​a​ ​big​ ​part​ ​in​ ​helping to​ ​rebuild​ ​Louisville’s​ ​tree​ ​canopy!

TreesLouisville, in partnership with the Louisville Metro Division of Community Forestry, is currently running a Tree Rebate Program as an incentive for homeowners to plant more trees. The Tree Rebate Program is open to all residents of Jefferson County. Through the program, you can earn a rebate of 40% (up to $80) on the purchase of a shade tree. Rebates will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis until funds run out.

ELIGIBILITY​ ​REQUIREMENTS:

● Tree must be considered a shade tree (i.e. larger canopy trees - oaks, elms, maples, etc., though we will accept smaller species like redbuds or serviceberries to

accommodate for smaller yards)

● Tree must be planted in a residential yard

● Maximum 3 tree applications per household

● Rebate does not include sales tax or any other costs - delivery, planting, other materials

● Tree must measure at least 1in in diameter at a point 6in above soil line

● Rebates are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds are available

Jack-o-Lantern Louisville is looking for up to 30 volunteers a night, to serve between 6pm-11:30pm on weeknights and 6pm-12am on weekends. There will be orientations held for all volunteers. Volunteers receive snacks, refreshments, and one FREE TICKET to the event for every shift worked.

Police Reports This Week

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
