6-8 October: St. James Art Show

Held in the heart of historic Old Louisville amid the country's largest collection of Victorian homes, the St. James Court Art Show has for decades provided Louisville with a rich cultural legacy. Hosting an impressive 750 artists from across the continent, the St. James Art Show features everything from 50-foot-high bronze sculpture to intricate metalwork. We at District 6 look forward to another year of the Art Show. 

Today: Give for Good Louisville!

The biggest day of local giving returns today when Give For Good Louisville takes over our community. Today, give generously to one or more of the 500+ local participating nonprofits that make our community one where people and place can thrive. Together with Metro Codes and Regulations, we've been hard at work these past few weeks holding the owners of Arcadia Apartments accountable. Arcadia's more than 90 open cases have received new inspections last week; click here for a full description of Arcadia's hundreds of code violations.

The following streets will be closed, or have their traffic diverted, between 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, 09-23-2017 for the Heart Walk.  

• Witherspoon from Brook to River Road & the Big Four Bridge
• River Road from Witherspoon and Preston to Witherspoon & the Big Four Bridge
• Clay from Witherspoon to Franklin
• Main Street from Hancock to Floyd (allow traffic to Slugger Field, no traffic WB past Jackson
• Street
• E Washington from Floyd to Preston
• Jackson at Witherspoon
• Shelby at Witherspoon
• Adam and Campbell Streets at Witherspoon
• Preston from Main to Witherspoon

Adjacent streets will also be affected by this event.

Bourbon & Beyond Road Closures

Next weekend, 23-24 September, Louisville will be holding the Bourbon and Beyond festival, celebrating Louisville's intoxicating traditions of fine music and living. If you're driving downtown, though, stay advised - quite a few roads are under the festival's influence. Here's the list of streets that will be affected:

The following streets will be closed from 10:00 Monday, 20 September to 17:00 Tuesday, 26 September:

• Edith Road from River Road to Mellwood Avenue

The following streets will have no parking from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday:

• River Dell Drive – 800 block
• Highwood Drive – 800 & 900 block
• Lake Avenue – from Mellwood Avenue to N. Birchwood Avenue
• Winifred Lane – from Mellwood Avenue to Callabell Road
• Warren Road – the entire length of the road
• Pauline Road – from Winifred east
• Kenil Court – from Kenilworth Road to Winifred Lane
• Callabell Road – from Kenilworth Road west (both forks)
• Edith Road – from Mellwood Avenue to Kenilworth Road
• Emily Road – from Edith Road to Kenilworth Road
• James Road – from Edith Road to Edna Road
• Edna Road – from Kenilworth Road to Thompson Road
• Thompson Road – from Edna Road to Mellwood Avenue
• Delmont Avenue – From Mellwood Avenue south until it dead ends

Change in Ownership - 601 Winkler Avenue

Param Liquor LLC (193 Bay St., Apt 2, Shepherdsville, KY 40165) on 8 September declared its intention to apply for a Retail Malt Beverage Package License for J. J. Liquor at 601 Winkler Avenue. Any person, association, corporation, or body politic may protest the granting of this license by writing the Department of Alcoholic Beverages, 1003 Twilight Trail, Frankfort KY 40601 by 7 October.

Reasons the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control can refuse a license include:

• The premise does not comply fully with all alcoholic beverage control statutes and regulations.
• The applicant or the premises does not comply with all regulations of a city administrator.
• The applicant has done an act which incurs a revocation of their license.
• The applicant has made any false material statement in their application.

Other factors include public sentiment in the area, number of licensed outlets in the area, potential for future growth, type of area involved, type of transportation available and financial potential of the area. For more information, feel free to read KRS 243.450, Kentucky's statute on the subject.

100-Day Challenge to End Youth Homelessness

The Coalition for the Homeless and a team of local providers, community leaders and government members recently launched the 100-Day Challenge, in pursuit of an ambitions 100-day goal to end homelessness among young people in our community. 

In 2016, there were 443 homeless young adults (age 18-24) in Louisville. The 100-Day Challenge team’s goal is to house at least 100 of these identified homeless young adults by November 8, 2017.

How You Can Help

• Rent a property to a homeless young adult who may have a poor/non-existent rental record
• Pledge funds to help with moving expenses and deposits
• Sponsor a storage unit to store donated furniture for youth apartments
• Donate supplies that homeless services programs need such as food, TARC tickets, backpacks, etc.

22-23 September - Jerry Eifler Art Show

Come enjoy and purchase the art created and painted by Louisville's own Father Jerry Eifler, spanning decades of artistry! Father Jerry Eifler has honed his craft for over sixty years; four years into his priesthood, Father Jerry began art lessons at The Kentucky School of Art in his pursuit of becoming a serious artist.  He continued those studies at the University of Louisville and has painted with and learned from many local artists. Concordant with Father Jerry’s belief that life is a process of becoming, he continues taking art lessons today.

Father Jerry’s art will be shown and be available for purchase at a Preview Wine and Cheese Party on Friday, September 22 from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday, September 23 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at The Clifton Center.  Tickets for the Preview Party are $25 and may be purchased by visiting cliftoncenter.org. Proceeds benefit The Clifton Center.

Police Reports This Week

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.

Fourth Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.
