District 10's own Ryan Burch accepted into London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, has gofundme fundraiser for living expenses

District 10 resident and actor Ryan Burch has been accepted into the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.  This is a huge deal for the St. X alumnus and second cousin of the late Louisville Metro Council President Jim King. LAMDA, as it is also known, is one of the most elite drama schools in the world. Of the more than 5,000 people who auditioned from around the world this past year, Burch was one of two Americans in a class of 27 who were accepted into the two-year, year-round program. But living in London is expensive, so Burch has launched a Gofundme fundraiser at www.gofundme.com/makethisdreamhappen. He also made a video that tells his story (in a funny way, of course) and it's at www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXnobs0T4RA "I am just a regular guy raised by a regular single working Mom who puts up with my non-regular dreams Burch said. "She supports me with her whole heart and encourages me every day to do the impossible." Labor Day changes at the Louisville Nature Center:

Lexington Road segment to be reconfigured  - work to begin Monday

Work will get underway Monday on a package of safety improvements for a section of Lexington Road. The segment between Payne Street and Grinstead Drive will be converted from the current design of two travel lanes in each direction to one travel lane in each direction plus dedicated turn lanes. The new configuration is intended to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents as previously demonstrated by similar projects across Louisville.

The road will be repaved and buffered bike lanes will be added on both sides. Drainage will also be improved. The project is part of the 2015 Lexington Road Corridor Transportation Plan and the broader Move Louisville multi-modal transportation plan that seeks to improve all facets of the city's transportation network for all of its users. Mayor Greg Fischer seeks input on public art

Mayor Fischer has asked the Commission on Public Art to review its catalogue of art in the public right of way to develop a list of those tied to discrimination, racism and slavery, in preparation for a community conversation about their display. Dates for the community forums have not yet been set, but people can go online now to share their thoughts.

Call for proposals for Imagine Greater Louisville 2020 plan

Metro Louisville, the Louisville Metro Council and the Fund for the Arts announce a call for proposals to activate strategies and actions identified within the Imagine Greater Louisville 2020 plan.  Individuals, groups, organizations, and partnerships are encouraged to submit creative proposals addressing how arts and culture can help the region grow, compete, thrive, and solve community problems.  Proposals of all sizes from all areas of the Metro representing the rich diversity of the community are encouraged.  Imagine Greater Louisville 2020 was introduced in early 2017 as the arts and cultural plan for the region. Arts and culture have the power to transform, to help advance a more competitive, economically stronger, more educated, creative, and compassionate Greater Louisville. This plan provides a shared vision for the role arts, culture and creativity can play in this stronger future. Proposals should be ready to begin by January 2018; provide services within Jefferson County; address at least one strategy and action outlined in the Imagine Greater Louisville 2020 plan; contain methods to track success. West Nile-infected mosquitos in Louisville Metro - take precautions

The Department of Public Health and Wellness has found West Nile-infected mosquitoes in surveillance traps in six Louisville ZIP Code areas: 40204, 40205, 40206, 40208, 40212 and 40214.  “It’s common for us to find mosquitoes infected with West Nile in Louisville around this time each year,” Public Health and Wellness director Dr. Sarah Moyer said in a news release. “What this means is people should take the appropriate precautions. They should wear insect repellant if going outside at dusk and at dawn, and should remove standing water around the home.”

It's not a secret - Homeowner Repair Program here to help eligible homeowners

Develop Louisville - Office of Housing and Community Development's Homeowner Repair Program may not be well known, but it's here to help. 

Several programs are available only to homeowners in the Russell, Shawnee or Portland neighborhoods. 

However, several are are accessible to eligible homeowners throughout Louisville Metro, including the Emergency Repair Program. Household must be at or below 80 percent AMI (Area Median Income) to be eligible to receive up to $5,000 toward emergency repair costs. Eligible costs include replacement or repair of major interior mechanical systems such as furnaces and water heaters and exterior health and safety issues such as gas and water line leaks and electrical wiring. Homeowners must continue to reside in the home as the owner occupant for a minimum of one year after work has been completed.

Did you know homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood damage?

MSD wants you to know that anyone in Louisville Metro can purchase flood insurance and even though flood insurance isn’t always required, people outside the mapped floodplain can still be at risk. More than 20 percent of all National Flood Insurance Program flood insurance claims are from areas outside the mapped high-risk areas. Just a few inches of water from a flood can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Protect yourself and your home by calling your insurance agent to learn more about flood insurance or by going to www.floodsmart.gov.

Jefferson Community & Technical College students ride TARC fare-free with ID

Starting in August, students enrolled at Jefferson Community Technical College can ride on TARC buses at any time by showing a school-issued photo ID to the bus driver when they board. TARC and Jefferson entered a partnership to provide the free rides, which will also be available to Jefferson faculty and staff, after a pilot program showed that students provided bus passes far surpassed academic achievement levels compared to their peers. The Jefferson-TARC agreement is in effect for the upcoming academic school year through May, 2018.

Use the latex paint recycling program

Louisville Metro Solid Waste and Habitat for Humanity's ReStore accept partial cans of residential latex paint for recycling. The collected paint is reblended for sale in Habitat ReStore locations in Louisville.  The money raised from the sale of recycled latex paint is reinvested in our community to create affordable home ownership opportunities.  Before you take your leftover paint to one of the collection facilities, there are a few limitations: paint must be latex only, and in usable condition. If the paint can is rusted shut, or if it doesn’t have a label, it will automatically be declined. Drop off latex paint during business hours at the following locations:  Louisville Metro Staffed Recycling Centers, open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at: 595 Hubbards Lane, 7219 Dixie Highway and 7201 Outer Loop.  Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations at 2777 S. Floyd Street, 4044 Taylorsville Road, and 1631 Rowan Street. Metro Parks and Recreation Golf Special: Labor Day Weekend Family Golf

Metro Parks and Recreation is offering an affordable family golfing package at its nine golf courses over the Labor Day weekend.

Though the area is receiving heavy rain today, the weekend outlook through Labor Day looks sunny and pleasant. 

For only $25, a family of up to four members can play nine holes at any Metro Parks course. The $25 includes greens and cart fees, and families can take advantage of the deal after 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 2; Sunday, September 3; and Monday, September 4.  

Families are encouraged to call in advance to book a tee time at the golf course of their choice. Metro Parks golf courses are open from daylight to dark seven days a week.

September 4 - Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle

Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle is Monday, September 4 at 8 a.m. at the Great Lawn. Grab your walking shoes, bicycle or kayak and head down to the Great Lawn on Labor Day for a healthy hometown event that the whole family can enjoy! Attendees can participate in various fitness demonstrations including zumba, yoga or tai chi on the Great Lawn to start the day. Then, take your pick from a 5k hike, 9.5-mile bike ride or a paddle on the Ohio River. This event is not a race. It is open to participants of all levels and we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the festivities.

Start Fresh! is a workshop for people who want to gain new information and tools to use second-chance or new checking accounts. This workshop will help you think about your relationship with money and plan how you will make mainstream financial services work for you. September 16 - Family Kite Festival at Riverside - The Farnsley-Moreman Landing

The sight of colorful kites flying through the air will punctuate a wonderful family event hosted at Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 16.

The first-ever “Family Kite Festival” will take place on the grounds of the historic home and farm, located in southwest Louisville at 7410 Moorman Road. Admission to the Kite Festival is free, although concessions will be offered for sale.

Activities include performances from the Chicago Kite Team and Aloft Stationary Kites; stilt walkers; bubble making, kite making and balsa wood airplane making stations; and games and complimentary tours (donations accepted) of the Farnsley-Moremen House. In addition, the LMPD display helicopter will also be at the festival for kids to enjoy. 

Join us for the "Tails on Trails" Adopt-a-Dog hike series as we aim to help adoptable dogs find a forever home. Each hike will be lead by our experienced volunteers along with Louisville Metro Animal Services staff and some adoptable dogs, and include an introduction to the Jefferson Memorial Forest and Metro Parks Natural Areas, then Louisville Metro Animal Services Staff.  The hike will be at Jefferson Memorial Forest's Paul Yost Recreation Area

September 17 - Louisville Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival

The first ever Louisville Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival will be Sunday, September 17 from noon to 6 p.m. at Waterfront Park.  Tickets: Online: $5 General Admission Day of: $10 General Admission Kids under 12: free! September 18 - Crimestoppers Golf Scramble

The 8th Annual Kentuckiana Crime Stoppers Keep Your Streets Safe Golf Scramble will be Monday, September 18 at Iroquois Golf Course. Registration starts at noon, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. For more information, call Larry Johnson at 751-5715. 

September 21 - Brightside Bash

Created in 2014, the Brightside Bash is a fun twist on a traditional gala fundraiser. The Bash features local bands, a silent auction, raffles, food, and fun! Brightside Bash 2017 will be held on Thursday, September 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Copper & Kings Distillery  at 1121 E. The Brightside Bash serves as a fundraiser for the Brightside Foundation. With the generous donations and contributions from this event Brightside is able to continue our many educational programs, sustainability initiatives, and beautification projects for our community.

September 26 - National Voter Registration Day Open House

Bobbie Holsclaw, Jefferson County Clerk, and Col. John Aubrey, Jefferson County Sheriff, invite you to a National Voter Registration Day Open House Tuesday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

The event, which will showcase Jefferson County's new election equipment, will be at the Edison Center at 701 West Ormsby Avenue.

How to file a damage claim with MSD

From MSD: Property Owners may file damage claims by calling MSD Customer Relations at 587-0603. They will need to reference the Camp Taylor Sewer Project, provide their name, address, phone number, and a brief description of their damage claim. 

MSD will forward the information to our contractor for them to investigate and render a decision on the claim in writing to the property owner. Additional information may be required such as receipts or photos as applicable. If the Contractor denies responsibility for the claim, the property owner may appeal the decision by contacting MSD Customer Relations again and request that the claim be evaluated by MSD.

MSD and our field representatives will monitor and track the claim progression to make sure the contractor is responsive.

Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $25 for District 10 residents - now in two sizes

The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.  The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left).

The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $25. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. The reduced cost recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Fourth Division - This division covers the area including Smoketown, Churchill Downs, the Fairgrounds, South Louisville and Old Louisville.

Fifth Division - This division covers the area including the Highlands, Clifton and Cherokee and Seneca Parks.

Sixth Division - This division covers the area including Audubon Park, Newburg, Norfolk, the airport and GE.
