Please take extra time and caution as school starts Wednesday

You may have noticed Jefferson County Public Schools school buses doing practice runs, as JCPS and many private schools start up again next week.

Please remember, especially with all the construction underway in our district, to allow extra time to get to work or school and to use extra caution as students will be waiting for those buses.

Meeting regarding application for liquor licenses at 1036 Goss Avenue

Neighbors, community leaders and other concerned citizens met to discuss a proposed Alcoholic Beverage License application for 1036 Goss Avenue Wednesday evening.

At left, Metro Council District 4 Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith and Councilman Mulvihill discussed the application.

Above, Mike Morris provided information to neighbors on a pending ABC application.

Ryan Burch has an amazing opportunity - let's help this District 10 resident make his dreams come true - deadline is September 21

District 10 resident and actor Ryan Burch has been accepted into the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

This is a huge deal for the St. X alumnus and second cousin of the late Louisville Metro Council President Jim King. LAMDA, as it is also known, is one of the most elite drama schools in the world.

"More than 5,000 people auditioned from around the world this past year," Burch said, "and I was one of two Americans in a class of 27 who were accepted into the two-year, year-round program."

But living in London is expensive, so Burch has launched a Gofundme fundraiser at www.gofundme.com/makethisdreamhappen. He also made a video that tells his story (in a funny way, of course) and it's at www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXnobs0T4RA

Burch thanks everyone who has helped him on this journey, including those working with Derby Dinner Playhouse, Music Theater of Louisville, and Shakespeare in the Park's Globe players.

August 12 - Buechel Terrace Neighborhood Association Cookout

The Buechel Terrace Neighborhood Association Cookout will be at the Buechel Train Depot, Saturday August 12 at 3 p.m. This is a family-friendly event! Hot dogs, chips, drinks, and dessert will be provided. Feel free to bring a dish if you choose and a lawn chair.

Monday, August 21 join a Peace Walk with LMPD's Fourth Division in the Germantown/Schnitzelburg area starting at 6 p.m. Meet up at the intersection of Rammers and Ellison Avenues.

August 30 - Ten-year anniversary party for the Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center at Schnitzelburg

Folks at the Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center at Schnitzelburg will be celebrating 10 years on August 30 at 11 a.m. The party will feature live music by The Harmonics, delicious food, and door prizes. Volunteers are needed for the party, so please call the number below if you are willing.

The Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center at Schnitzelburg is in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church at 1016 East Burnett Avenue.

Regular activities include aerobics, directed exercise, chair volleyball, Pinochle, bingo, crochet, and watercolor painting. The Center has gym equipment, a sewing room, and library, and they are still seeking the donation of a commercial grade treadmill. September 23 for the annual Fall Yard Sale! The sale will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a bake sale in the cafeteria.

October 23 - Flu shots at the center. Walgreens will be on-site to give flu shots. They will be be free Medicare or most insurance will cover the cost of the shots. If you are interested in getting a flu shot please use the signup sheet by the front office at the center.

Schnitzelburg Community Farmers Market

The Schnitzelburg Community Farmers Market is at 1481 South Shelby Street, every Saturday, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Experience hundreds of graceful native butterflies sipping nectar from colorful flowers, basking in the sunlight and flying freely as you wander through our new 1,000-square-foot outdoor flight house located in the Africa Zone. The Cyril Allgeier Community Center offers youth, adult, and senior citizen programs in the Camp Taylor Neighborhood. Programs include 50 & over men's basketball, youth sports (flag football, volleyball, & basketball), adult aerobics, and Girl Scouts.

Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The community center features a full size basketball court that is available for open gym as well as for rent, and also has a large meeting room that is available for community meetings or to rent. For more information about programs, camps, or rental opportunities call 456-3261.

MetroTV moving to Channel 184

Spectrum, a local cable television service provider, has begun to make changes to their system to increase security. As a result, some channels will change in the coming month as the upgrades are completed. MetroTV, the local government channel that gives you access to Council meetings, special events, and other city information, will move from its current location on Channel 25 to Channel 184. If you have any questions or issues receiving MetroTV on your television, please contact Spectrum Cable via their website at www.spectrum.com

Public Comment Period for New TARC Fare Collection System Begins

TARC will be collecting public comment on a proposed fare collection policy, including at eight public meetings.

The new fare collection system will allow passengers to pay for their rides with the tap of a smartcard as they board a TARC bus. Fares will not increase and cash – exact fare – will still be an option for payment.

The new smart cards will replace all paper products - tickets, passes and paper transfer slips throughout the system, except on TARC3.

It's not a secret - Homeowner Repair Program here to help eligible homeowners

Develop Louisville - Office of Housing and Community Development's Homeowner Repair Program may not be well known, but it's here to help.

Several programs are available only to homeowners in the Russell, Shawnee or Portland neighborhoods.

However, several are are accessible to eligible homeowners throughout Louisville Metro, including the Emergency Repair Program. Household must be at or below 80 percent AMI (Area Median Income) to be eligible to receive up to $5,000 toward emergency repair costs. Eligible costs include replacement or repair of major interior mechanical systems such as furnaces and water heaters and exterior health and safety issues such as gas and water line leaks and electrical wiring. Homeowners must continue to reside in the home as the owner occupant for a minimum of one year after work has been completed.

Did you know homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood damage?

MSD wants you to know that anyone in Louisville Metro can purchase flood insurance and even though flood insurance isn’t always required, people outside the mapped floodplain can still be at risk. More than 20 percent of all National Flood Insurance Program flood insurance claims are from areas outside the mapped high-risk areas. Just a few inches of water from a flood can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Protect yourself and your home by calling your insurance agent to learn more about flood insurance or by going to www.floodsmart.gov.

LMPD's anonymous tips - call, text or submit a tip online

Contrary to what many people think, when you submit a tip it's not recorded, there is no caller ID, and they don't want to know your name. When a tip is entered, the person taking the tip doesn't even use gender identity of the person giving the tip. You can provide a tip:

The Internet-based systems route messages through a server that encrypts cell phone numbers before they get to police, making tips virtually impossible to track. The anonymous texting feature allows people with tips to communicate with police in near-real time.

Calling 574-LMPD not only helps stop crime, but it enhances the overall quality of life of everyone in your community by getting criminals, who target innocent people, off the streets. It also helps hold offenders accountable for their actions.

TARC Summer Youth Pass good through August 31

The TARC Summer Youth Pass costs $30 and is available to anyone 6-19 years old. With the pass, youths can take unlimited TARC rides on all routes through August 31.

Jefferson Community & Technical College students ride TARC fare-free with ID

Starting in August, students enrolled at Jefferson Community Technical College can ride on TARC buses at any time by showing a school-issued photo ID to the bus driver when they board.

“With the Jefferson student ID as good as fare, we’re removing transportation as a barrier to education attainment and opportunity,” said J. Barry Barker, executive director of TARC.

TARC and Jefferson entered a partnership to provide the free rides, which will also be available to Jefferson faculty and staff, after a pilot program showed that students provided bus passes far surpassed academic achievement levels compared to their peers. The Jefferson-TARC agreement is in effect for the upcoming academic school year through May, 2018.

Farmers Market Association and Guide to Local Food Resources

Use the latex paint recycling program

Louisville Metro Solid Waste and Habitat for Humanity's ReStore accept partial cans of residential latex paint for recycling. The collected paint is reblended for sale in Habitat ReStore locations in Louisville.

The money raised from the sale of recycled latex paint is reinvested in our community to create affordable home ownership opportunities.

Before you take your leftover paint to one of the collection facilities, there are a few limitations: paint must be latex only, and in usable condition. If the paint can is rusted shut, or if it doesn’t have a label, it will automatically be declined.

Drop off latex paint during business hours at the following locations:

Louisville Metro Staffed Recycling Centers, open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at: 595 Hubbards Lane, 7219 Dixie Highway and 7201 Outer Loop.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations at 2777 S. Floyd Street, 4044 Taylorsville Road, and 1631 Rowan Street. For hours, click here.

Note: any paint that is oil based or requiring paint thinner for cleanup is considered a hazardous material and should be taken to the HAZ BIN at 7501 Grade Lane, which is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

August 12 - last Neighborhood Place Back to School event

The last of Neighborhood Place back to school events will be August 12. These events provide free school supplies while supplies last as well as a wide range of services and resources to help local youth and families be better prepared for the start of school year.

The bulk of the supplies and funding for these events comes from area businesses, churches, schools and individual donors. To learn more about specific activities, eligibility and other requirements, please call the numbers listed or click here.

Events include fried chicken dinner, car raffles, capital prize, cake wheels, booths and much more. A limited amount of parking will be available via the Brownsboro Road entrance. August 12 - Cornbread and Tortillas Festival

Cornbread & Tortillas is a collective of Appalachian and Latino artists whose mission is to build community by sharing art, music, dance, and cultural heritage. Through outreach events, educational shows, workshops, and performances we celebrate our similarities and differences to create unity in a diverse world.

The festival starts at 11 a.m. with a bilingual singalong, followed by dance demonstrations, weaving workshop, storytelling, cakewalk, food trucks and a concert starting at 7 p.m.

August 18 - Mapped Out event to benefit Louisville Visual Art

From 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, August 18, local artists will paint eight-foot by eight-foot murals. Enjoy food, drink and a silent auction of this newly-created art. The event benefits LVA's Mural Art Program.

How to file a damage claim with MSD

From MSD: Property Owners may file damage claims by calling MSD Customer Relations at 587-0603. They will need to reference the Camp Taylor Sewer Project, provide their name, address, phone number, and a brief description of their damage claim.

MSD will forward the information to our contractor for them to investigate and render a decision on the claim in writing to the property owner. Additional information may be required such as receipts or photos as applicable. If the Contractor denies responsibility for the claim, the property owner may appeal the decision by contacting MSD Customer Relations again and request that the claim be evaluated by MSD.

MSD and our field representatives will monitor and track the claim progression to make sure the contractor is responsive.

Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $25 for District 10 residents - now in two sizes

The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.

The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left).

The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $25. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form.

The reduced cost recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Fourth Division - This division covers the area including Smoketown, Churchill Downs, the Fairgrounds, South Louisville and Old Louisville.

Fifth Division - This division covers the area including the Highlands, Clifton and Cherokee and Seneca Parks.

Sixth Division - This division covers the area including Audubon Park, Newburg, Norfolk, the airport and GE.
