Center For Neighborhoods is happy to announce Neighborhood Institute 2017!

The Neighborhood Institute is a leadership education program designed to equip neighborhood leaders with skills and resources needed to initiate positive change in the community through their neighborhood, homeowner, and condo associations. Classes meet every Thursday, 6:00 - 8:30PM at Center For Neighborhoods Offices - 507 South Third Street, for 12 consecutive weeks (August 24th, 2017 – November 9th, 2017). Dinner is provided each week. There is no charge to attend, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. Applications will be accepted through August 11th, 2017.

The Neighborhood Institute Fall 2017 is open to all neighborhoods, Metro Council Districts, and the whole community.

According to a 2017 state assessment from the Kentucky Department for Public Health, Kentucky leads the country for hepatitis C cases, and more than 38,000 Kentuckians are currently infected with hepatitis C. In recognition of World Hepatitis Day on July 28, KentuckyOne Health, the Kentucky Department for Public Health, Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness, and the University of Louisville are teaming up to provide free hepatitis C screenings throughout Louisville.

Most people with hepatitis C do not know they are infected because the virus often causes no symptoms until advanced liver disease develops. It’s important to get tested if you have ever injected drugs, received blood from a donor with the disease, have been on long-term kidney dialysis, have HIV, had a blood transfusion or organ transplant before July 1992, were born to a mother with hepatitis C, or were born between 1945-1965, when the hepatitis C epidemic peaked.

Attorney General Beshear warns of Charity Scam

FRANKFORT, KY. (July 25, 2017) – A caller from a sham charity dubbed, “Coalition for Veterans of America” is preying upon Kentuckians’ goodwill toward veterans and veteran causes, Attorney General Andy Beshear said today.

The Office of the Attorney General has received multiple reports from Kentuckians, including a report directly from the Kentucky State Police, saying a caller claiming to be with the “Coalition for Veterans of America” is seeking donations to help cover Veterans Affairs medical bills and aid homeless veterans.

Beshear’s Office of Senior Protection verified the organization is a sham, and is working with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs to increase awareness among veterans and their families throughout July, which is Military Consumer Protection month.

Beshear said upon learning of the scam, his office issued a scam alert because he wants Kentuckians who would like to support deserving veterans and their families to do so without being victimized.

“Our veterans and their families deserve respect and safeguards from scammers,” Beshear said. “To make sure our veterans and legitimate veteran organizations receive donations, I am asking Kentuckians to beware of this scam and take time to verify a charity before making a donation.”

Donors who are not familiar with a charitable organization can verify official organizations on CharityNavigator.org. The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection website offers research tools, including a list of active charitable giving campaigns in Kentucky.

Beshear said donors should follow these additional tips to avoid a sham charity scam:

• Do not feel pressured to give money or financial information over the phone.
• Beware of sound-alike charities.
• Be cautious of social media requests for donations. Although some may be legitimate, consumers need to verify before making donations.
• Ask solicitors what percentage of your donation will be given to relief efforts. By law, the solicitor must tell you if you ask. 
• Avoid wire transfers or gift cards as a donation method.

Better protecting Kentucky families, especially seniors, from scams is one of the core missions of Beshear’s office.

Kentuckians interested in staying ahead of scammers can sign up to receive Scam Alerts from Beshear’s office by texting the words KYOAG Scam to GOV311 (468311), or visit ag.ky.gov/scams to sign up with your mobile phone number or email address.

Police Reports This Week

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.

3700 block Woodruff Ave (Sun, 2320) – CBA: the victim intervened in a fight, and the suspect struck the victim with a broken metal broom handle

Robbery:

S 4th St & Winkler Ave (Sun, 0400) – an unknown suspect offered to give the victim a ride home; a second unknown suspect emerged from the vehicle, brandished a small black handgun; the victim’s money was taken and a third unknown suspect took his bike

400 block M St (Tue, 0105) – the victims were asleep on the porch; the identified suspects, armed with a lighter that resembled a revolver, took the victims’ wallets and phones

300 M St (Fri, 0227-0257) – the victim gave conflicting stories, but eventually claimed 5 BMs forcibly took her car key and stole her vehicle

1800 block Berry Blvd (Sun, 2130-2215) – the victim was pistol-whipped, and his wallet was taken by 2 unknown males

2700 block Montana Ave (Tue, 0138) – the victim sustained a gunshot wound during a home invasion

3900 7th St Rd (Mon, 1749-1805) – the BM suspect stole items from the business, and when he was confronted, he indicated he had a gun

120 block E Kingston Ave (Sun, 1500) – the victim was assaulted and his money was taken by 2 BMs, 14-20 YOA

Wanton Endangerment:

800 block Denmark St (Tue, 1130-1800) – the suspect threatened to shoot the victim

Burglary:

1300 block S Floyd St (Sun, 0416) – a known suspect unlawfully entered the apartment by breaking a window; while inside the suspect moved a refrigerator and moved items

1500 block S 3rd St (Mon, 1515) – a window was found removed, and the victim claimed to have heard an unknown male’s voice inside the residence

900 block E Oak St (Tue, 1700-1932) – a screen and window were removed from the vacant property, and copper piping was removed

4300 block S 2nd St (Mon, 0710-1940) – a basement window was forced open; change and various electronic items were taken

3300 block Bohannon Ave (Tue-Wed, 1500-1800) – the shed was likely UNLOCKED; a weed eater and a push mower were taken
