Cultural Pass and Summer Reading Programs

As school wraps up for the summer, there are plenty of learning opportunities for Louisville students of all ages over the next three months. 

In celebration of both the Library’s Summer Reading Program and the Cultural Pass the Main Library will host the Super Summer Reading Kickoff and Cultural Pass Showcase on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. This free, family-friendly event will offer a plethora of activities, performances, and crafts featuring more than two dozen members of the Arts and Culture Alliance. Participating groups will include the Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Science Center, Frazier History Museum, Kentucky Shakespeare, and more. Cultural Pass
The Cultural Pass supports and encourages lifelong learning by providing free access to 38 of Greater Louisville’s arts and cultural institutions for children and young adults to age 21. The Pass is valid from June 3 to Aug. 12 for one-time general admission at each of the participating institutions.

The 2017 Cultural Pass and Summer Reading materials are available now at any Louisville Free Public Library branch and any Metro Louisville Community Center.

Pass holders can register and track the progress of their Cultural Pass online at www.lfpl.org/culturalpass and are encouraged to visit as many venues as they are able during the summer. Children with 5 or more documented visits receive a Cultural Pass giveaway prize and will be entered into a drawing to win additional prizes, including a free stay at 21C Museum Hotel, tickets to area performances like The Christmas Carol at Actors Theatre or Louisville Ballet’s Nutcracker, family memberships to Bernheim Forest, the Frazier History Museum, Gheens Science Hall and Planetarium, and more.

Summer Reading
Presented by the Library Foundation, the Library’s annual Summer Reading Program is a free 10-week program that encourages kids and teens to read for fun over the summer by offering prizes and incentives. Every child—from infant through 12th grade—who completes the program will receive a backpack or aluminum water bottle, along with passes to local attractions like the Kentucky Science Center, Squire Boone Caverns, a Bats baseball game, the Frazier History Museum, and more.

Other summer programs
To help families sort through the many summer offerings, a searchable database of quality Out of School Time (OST) programs is available through 2-1-1. Thanks to the BLOCS community partnership, families can access this resource year-round by visiting www.louisvilleblocs.org and clicking on the 2-1-1 link. The list is also available by dialing Metro United Way’s 211 call-in line, or accessing the 211 app. 

First Neighborhood Place LG&E WeCare Energy Efficiency Overview Call 1-800-356-5467 for more information.  Representatives from the WeCare Program at LG&E will be on hand to talk with interested persons about energy efficiency, energy usage and tips to reduce utility bills. WeCare staff can also help determine if households are eligible for a variety of free services including air duct sealing and insulation, attic and wall insulation, programmable thermostats and much more. TARC Summer Youth Pass Now Available Getting to jobs, the movies, recreational activities and fun events around Louisville is affordable and easy for young people with the TARC Summer Youth Pass, which is now on sale. The pass costs $30 and is available to anyone 6-19 years old.  With the pass, youths can take unlimited TARC rides on all routes from June 1-Aug. 31. The pass can be ordered from TARC’s website, www.ridetarc.org, or purchased at the following locations: Union Station, 1000 W. Broadway Nia Center, 2900 W. Newburg Middle School Bench Dedication

When neighbors saw that someone has destroyed a bus stop bench where the elderly and expectant mothers would rest while waiting for their bus, Mr. and Mrs. McKnight took action.

Richard McKnight, General Electric employee and his wife Tonya partnered with Newburg Middle School and Councilwoman Shanklin to address their concern. The 8th grade class of Newburg Middle started saving bottle tops and on May 12th the dedication of a bench made from plastic bottle tops was realized and celebrated. Representatives from the Mayor’s office, GE, TARC, JCPS and many other concerned residents of District 2 along with Councilwoman Shanklin were present to witness the dedication.

 Tree Bates Program

The Division of Community Forestry has teamed up with the non-profit organization Trees Louisville to offer Jefferson County residents up to 40% off the cost of a shade tree. 

Eligibility requirement are as follows:

• Tree must be considered a shade tree and selected from Division’s Master Tree List
• Program open to Jefferson County, KY residents only
• Max 3 submissions per household
• Tree must measure at least 1inch in diameter at a point 6 inches above soil line
• Tree must be purchased and planted between October 2016 – May 31, 2017
• Rebates are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds are available
• Rebate is only eligible for purchase price of tree (i.e. excludes tax, planting or delivery fees, etc.).

Fan Collection for Seniors and Disabled Residents KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living is again partnering with Louisville Metro Office for Aging & Disabled Citizens (OADC) to collect electric fans for seniors and persons with physical disabilities.  The fans will be distributed to qualified individuals within the KIPDA region including Jefferson, Bullitt, Henry, Shelby, Oldham, Spencer, and Trimble Counties. Donations of new box fans will be collected through June 14 at: KIPDA, 11520 Commonwealth Drive (Lou., KY 40299) WLKY Studio, 1918 Mellwood Ave. Drop off hours are Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. for KIPDA and 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. for WLKY.     Monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase fans.
