Councilman Mulvihill attended this week’s annual board meeting of the George Rogers Clark Park Neighborhood Association (GRCPNA) to provide updates. Representatives from Norton Healthcare and Messer Construction provided construction updates on the expansion and improvements underway at Norton Audubon Hospital.

Historic marker ceremony at Germantown Lofts
 Germantown Mill Lofts was developed by Underhill Associates. Members of the Underhill family attended the dedication, including, from left to right, Colin, Ann, Jeff and Todd Underhill
The text of the historic marker:
Built in 1889, this was the first cotton mill in Louisville and a significant example of Victorian industrial architecture. The mill initially produced cotton warp for “Kentucky Jeans,” but in 1919 diversified into other fabrics under the name of Louisville Textile Co. In the 1930s-40s, Fincastle Fabrics were made here and sold worldwide. By 1948, Louisville Textiles, Inc. was Kentucky’s largest textile mill.
(Reverse) Germantown Mill Lofts- In 1967, the mill closed due to labor costs and competition. Booker-Price Furniture Corp. bought the facility and owned it from 1968-2012. Another notable tenant was the Louisville Antique Mall, which was located here from 1986-2012. In 2016, extensive renovations for a residential community were completed.The original mill complex was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and was expanded in 2016.
June 1 - Camp Taylor MSD project meeting
Neighbors living in the MSD construction area are encouraged to attend a special meeting hosted by Camp Zachary Taylor Neighborhood Association to be held Thursday, June 1 at 7 p.m. The
meeting will be held at the Holy Family Church gymnasium at 3926 Poplar Level Road
MSD and
contractor project managers will be on hand to provide updates and address
concerns associated with each phase of the sewer construction.

June 2 and 3 - Germantown Schnitzelburg Blues Festival
 On Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, the Kentuckiana Blues Society and Check's Cafe will host the eighth annual Germantown Schnitzelburg Blues Festival at the corner of Hickory Street and Burnett Ave. The festival receives support from District 10 Metro Councilman Pat Mulvihill.
The street festival with an outdoor stage is free and will have three blues bands each evening starting at 6:30 p.m. and playing until midnight. Admission is free and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Home of the Innocents.

Eastern Parkway bridge replacement
continues
Eastern Parkway is reduced to one lane in each direction between Poplar Level Road and Royal Avenue (mile markers 5.5 to 5.9) due to bridge replacement. Center events
The Louisville Nature Center offers summer camps for kids ages 6
to 12, and include topics from drawing animals to a Harry Potter-themed

Cyril Allgeier Community Center
 The Cyril Allgeier Community Center offers youth, adult, and senior citizen programs in the Camp Taylor Neighborhood. Programs include 50 & over men's basketball, youth sports (flag football, volleyball, & basketball), adult aerobics, and girl scouts. In addition to these we serve as the host to KIVA volleyball practices, Louisville Visual Art Association classes, Metro Parks Men's Basketball League, Metro Parks Youth Volleyball Leagues, and LXC Volleyball Leagues.
Allgeier Community Center also offers Summer Camp, Winter Break, and Spring Break programs at a reasonable cost. The community center features a full size basketball court that is available for open gym as well as for rent, and also has a large meeting room that is available for community meetings or to rent. TARC and Jefferson Community Technical College announce fare-free bus rides for students
Starting in August, students enrolled at Jefferson
Community Technical College can ride on TARC buses at any time by showing a
school-issued photo ID to the bus driver when they board.
“With the Jefferson student ID as good as fare, we’re
removing transportation as a barrier to education attainment and opportunity,”
said J. Barry Barker, executive director of TARC.
TARC and Jefferson entered a partnership to provide the
free rides, which will also be available to Jefferson faculty and staff, after
a pilot program showed that students provided bus passes far surpassed academic
achievement levels compared to their peers. The Jefferson-TARC agreement
is in effect for the upcoming academic school year through May 2018.
Metro Parks and Recreation seeking lifeguards for outdoor pools
 Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation is seeking to fill open lifeguard positions at its four outdoor pools; Norton, Algonquin, Sun Valley and at Nelson Hornbeck Park in Fairdale. In addition to current staff, the Metro Parks and Recreation aquatics division says there’s room for approximately 15 more lifeguards to be hired over the summer.

Metro Parks and Recreation lifeguards must:
- Possess and maintain lifeguard certification, CPR and First Aid
- Able to observe swimmers for safety and sit for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
- Able to exercise tact and diplomacy when interacting with the public
Lifeguards who do not meet those qualifications have the opportunity to attend a lifeguard training class from 4-9 p.m. at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center from Monday, May 22 to Friday May 26.
The cost of the class is $200 – but that fee is waived if upon completion the candidate pledges to work for Metro Parks and Recreation during the 2017 summer outdoor pool season.

Louisville Bats Nights
 The
Louisville Bats are hosting two types of Louisville Metro Government
Nights.
Metro Council Mondays: For this program, the Bats
will host groups and organizations doing the good of the community. This
includes 12,000 total tickets distributed for use on any of these Monday
nights: May 1, May 8, June 19, July 17 and August 28. Examples include school
fundraisers and charity auctions.
Community Nights: The Bats will host two
community nights, providing tickets, hot dogs, and soft drinks to non-profit
groups who would not be able to afford a Bats game under regular circumstances.
These two nights include 4,000 guests for each game on July 18 and August 2.
Groups will need to contact the Bats office directly to sign up for the
program. Examples include mentoring organizations and social service agencies.

for either part of the program, organizations should contact Shelby Harding at sharding@batsbaseball.com.

Through May 31: Get some financial help when you buy a shade tree through "Treebates"
 The Division of Community Forestry has teamed up with the non-profit organization Trees Louisville to offer Jefferson County residents up to 40 percent off the cost of a shade tree.
Eligibility requirements are as follows:
- Tree must be considered a shade tree and selected from the Division’s Master Tree List.
- Program open to Jefferson County, Ky. residents only.
- Maximum of three submissions per household.
- Tree must measure at least one inch in diameter at a point six inches above the soil line.
- Tree must be purchased and planted between October 2016 and May 31, 2017.
- Rebates are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds are available.
- Rebate is only eligible for purchase price of tree (i.e. excludes tax, planting or delivery fees, etc.).

Electric fans needed for local seniors and disabled residents - donate through June 14
 In preparation for warmer temperatures this season, KIPDA Area Agency on
Aging and Independent Living is again partnering with Louisville Metro Office
for Aging & Disabled Citizens (OADC) to collect electric fans for seniors
and persons with physical disabilities. The fans will be distributed to
qualified individuals within the KIPDA region including Jefferson, Bullitt,
Henry, Shelby, Oldham, Spencer, and Trimble Counties.
Donations of new box fans will be collected through June 14 at:

Drop off hours are Monday
through Friday; 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. for KIPDA and 8:30 a.m.to 5:30 p.m. for WLKY.

Last year, more than 600 fans were
distributed to residents in need thanks to fan or monetary donations given by

Local station WLKY TV32 provided both on-air and on-line advertising, in
addition to serving as one of the drop-off locations, and will provide similar
support to this year’s efforts.
On June 24, a “Fan Fair” will be
held from 8 a.m. to noon at The Edison Center at 701 W. Ormsby Avenue to
distribute the collected fans to seniors 60 and older, as well as to
individuals with physical disabilities, on a first-come, first-served basis. Watch this newsletter for details on the event.

 Three-year-old Ra’jah now calls Louisville Metro Animal
Services her home, but the shelter is a very stressful place for pets. While
the LMAS staff does its best to make their stay as comfortable as possible,
pets don’t understand why they are in the shelter or if/when they’ll ever get
to leave. Will you please help change Ra’jah’s status from homeless to
home-bound? She is FREE to an approved adopter. Not only has she been spayed,
microchipped and vaccinated, she is THE SWEETEST pup in town. Ra’jah is an LMAS
staff favorite. She loves belly rubs, but she can’t seem to get enough of them
in the shelter. She is easy-going and very friendly. She loves both humans and
other dogs. Ra’jah has been “dog tested” with large and small dogs, kittens and
a grown cat. She passed each test with flying colors! Stop by the LMAS Animal

May 20 - 13th annual Forest Fest Music Festival at Jefferson Memorial Forest
 A spectacular day of Bluegrass and Americana music, food and beverages,
craft vendors, and youth activities in a scenic environment awaits those who
visit Jefferson Memorial Forest’s thirteenth annual Forest Fest on Saturday,
May 20.
The lineup starts off at 11:30 a.m.with the Jon Stickley Trio, followed by The Wooks (from Lexington).

Starting May 22 - give
input on the Develop Louisville Comprehensive Plan
 Develop Louisville staff
has been engaging with the public on an update to the Comprehensive Plan. Some
methods of engagement have included work groups, an Advisory Committee,
outreach to local municipalities with zoning authority and appearing before various
bodies and organizations including the Committee of the Whole.
In the coming weeks,
Develop Louisville will be holding six open house forums to provide the public
will an opportunity to view and to comment on the work done so far.
The dates, times and
locations for the forums are:

May 22: Main Library (301 York St.) at 4 p.m.
- Wednesday,
May 24: Southwest Library (9725 Dixie Hwy.) at 6 p.m.
- Tuesday,
May 30: Bowman Field (2815 Taylorsville Rd.) at 6 p.m.
- Saturday,
June 3: The Table (1800 Portland Ave.) at 9 a.m.
- Monday,
June 5: Fern Creek High School (9115 Fern Creek Rd.) at 6 p.m.
- Tuesday,
June 6: The Jeffersonian (former Jeffersontown Community Center) (10617

The forums will allow for
additional input on the work completed to date (draft goals and objectives) and
will help develop policies. These meetings will be open house style with a
short introductory presentation. At these forums, we are especially interested
in engaging with citizens who have not yet participated in the Comprehensive
Plan update process. These forums will look similar to the Vision
Louisville forums that occurred a few years ago.

Louisville Junior Golf Tour begins May 28
 New this year, Louisville Metro Parks presents the Louisville Junior Golf Tour. The tour is designed for all children who play golf. No matter the skill level we want junior golfers in a fun and stress free environment while competing. With affordable pricing, relaxed rules, easy yardage courses, and score limits each hole any junior golfer can come join our tournaments. We will start with a kickoff tournament on May 28 at Seneca Golf Course. This event will ONLY COST A SMALL GREEN FEE OF $9.50. Regular Tour events will only cost $25 each. We will have a season long point system that includes the kickoff tournament, three regular tour stops at a Metro Parks golf course near you, the historical Junior Falls Cities Tournament, and a season ending Tour Championship. New Louisville Metro Parks app
 A new mobile application that allows users to locate the nearest park or community center and make a tee time at any Metro Parks and Recreation golf course is now available for Apple and Android devices free of charge in the app store.
In addition to the GPS-enabled mapping and tee time technology, the app provides a comprehensive calendar of programs and events, information on athletic leagues and schedules, information about shelter and pavilion rentals, links to social media and more.
Users can find it in the app store by searching “Louisville Metro Parks and Rec.”
