Join us for our new "Tails on Trails" Adopt-a-Dog hike series as we aim to help adoptable dogs find a forever home. Each hike will be lead by experienced JMF Volunteers along with Louisville Metro Animal Services Staff and some adoptable dogs. JMF Welcome Center Team at 502/368-5404. This is a FREE event. 

Note: If you bring your own dog, they must remain on a leash and have good manners. We want everyone, furry and all, to have an enjoyable experience

Jefferson Memorial Forest Summer Camps

Join us for a unique day camp experience combining summer fun with nature-based science education activities. We offer a variety of camps for ages 5-15. Campers will take on the role of naturalist, scientist, and adventurer as they explore the forest and the creatures that inhabit it. Traditional summer camp fun will round out the experience, creating an adventure to remember for a lifetime!

Community Nights:

The Louisville Bats will host two community nights, providing tickets, hot dogs and soft drinks to non-profit groups who would not be able to afford a Bats game under regular circumstances on these two nights:

• July 18 
• August 2.

Metro Council Mondays:

Councilman Dan Johnson has teamed up with the Bats to provide tickets for groups and organizations doing good for the community that might not fit into the above category.  This includes ticket vouchers without hot dogs and drinks for use on the following Monday nights:

• June 19
• July 17
• August 28

Dr. Kristina Zierold, an associate professor at the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences, is conducting a research study funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) entitled "Coal ash exposure and neurobehavioral performance and symptoms in children aged 6-14 years old."

This study is very important for Louisville community members because coal ash storage sites (landfills and ponds) and releases from the power plant stacks are concerns in neighborhoods surrounding LG&E’s Cane Run and Mill Creek Power Plants. Since 2012, Dr. Zierold has been working with the community to study coal ash and health, and many people have complained about coal ash exposure and the possible effects on the health of their children and families. 

We are recruiting over 300 children in Louisville for this study. Learn more details on the study webpage here.

What will you be asked to do?

• Allow small air pollution sampling equipment in your home
• Allow your child to take a series of computer tests  
• Collect your child’s fingernail and toenail clippings
• Fill out questionnaires
• We come to your home, no trips to UofL needed

Metro Council Members James Peden D23, Vicki Aubrey-Welch D13 and Madonna Flood D24 are sponsoring a free summer concert series at Highview Park for the seventh straight year.  Each concert will take place every other Friday from June through August.  The event is free, open to the public and family friendly.  Local vendors will be on hand with a variety of food options.  People are encouraged to bring chairs or a blanket to enjoy the show.

Get rid of those old electronics, hazardous materials, household building supplies and other space eating objects at a free Responsible Recycling event on Saturday, May 13. The event, sponsored by the office District 9 Metro Councilman Bill Hollander, runs from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Louisville Water Tower Park, 3005 River Road. Fresh Stop Markets are “pop up” farm-fresh food markets set up at local churches, community centers, and now even in a crossfit gym, in fresh food insecure neighborhoods. The food has been paid for in advance so that farmers don’t face the same degree of risk as they do with a standard farmers’ market. 

Fresh Stop Markets are open to everyone and created, led, and sustained by community leaders. Most Fresh Stop Markets reserve 75 percent of all shares for those individuals and families identifying as having limited resources according to the WIC eligibility guidelines (185 percent of poverty or less).

TreesLouisville is launching a Tree Rebate Program in partnership with the Louisville Metro Division of Community Forestry.

An incentive to get homeowners to plant trees on private property and to help improve our city's declining tree canopy, this program will run through May 31st 2017 and will allow eligible participants to receive 40% back (max. $80) on the purchase price of a shade tree.

·         Participants must be residents of Jefferson County and trees must also be planted in Jeff Co. 

·         Trees must be considered a shade/canopy tree (verified by submitting itemized receipt with form)

·         Trees must be planted in a residential yard

·         Trees must measure at least 1in. diameter

·         Max 3 trees per household

·         We're also trying to encourage participants to share photos of their new trees on Instagram/Twitter with #louisvilletreebate

As of May 1st, Louisville Metro Animal Services will accept the surrendering of pets by appointment only. This new process is an effort to better serve the public and its pets. It is a proactive approach to saving animals’ lives. LMAS is not changing what it takes, just when.

Currently, LMAS accepts pet surrenders, on-the-spot, even if the shelter is full. The appointment process, called managed intake, will give LMAS an opportunity to control the revolving door of pets. Last year, 1,960 pets were surrendered to LMAS, and so far this year, more than 600 pets have been surrendered.

Any animal determined by LMAS to be stray, sick, injured or aggressive will be accepted immediately, without an appointment.

The new process will not only reduce overcrowding, it will also help with pet retention as owners may decide to keep their pets with more time to think about their decision and explore other options. Managed intake will also help reduce the length of stay for animals in the shelter and gives staff more time to make sure adequate resources are available.

Under the new process, owners wanting to surrender their pets will first fill-out and submit a Pet History Form. The Pet History Form can be filled-out and submitted at the LMAS Animal Care Center (3705 Manslick Rd.) or online at www.louisvilleky.gov/animalservices. Once LMAS has reviewed the form, a staff member will contact the pet owner within two business days to set an appointment. Owners who surrender their pets will be charged a $25 impoundment fee to help cover the cost of care for their pet.

 Cat Caretakers living in the following Jefferson County zip codes 40208, 40209, 40213, 40214, 40215, 40216, 40217, 40219, 40258 and 40272 are eligible  for spay/neuter services for unowned community cats,  They will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, treated for flea and ear-mite medicine, given a great vet visit, ear-tipped (the universal symbol of a neutered cat) and returned.

When there are no more kittens; the number of cats gradually goes down  and annoying behaviors such as yowling, fighting, spraying stop.
