Street Dedication
Please join the family and friends of Robert L. Burks on Sunday, May 21, 2017 3:00PM corner of Exeter and Indian Trail for dedication ceremony.
Robert L. Burks
(AKA Mr. Burks, Bob, Mr. B, Bullitt) relocated his family from his parents’ farm in Fern Creek, KY
to the Broadmoor Subdivision in the Newburg community during the summer of
1957. He resided in that modest home until his Home Going Sept. of 2016.
Literally “hell or high water” could not make him leave his cherished home or
community in that his house was flooded on four separate occasions and despite
the urging of his children, he refused to leave even overnight.
Upon his arrival
to the Newburg Community, Bob very quickly ingrained himself establishing
alliances and friendships with several of the informal leaders of
the area. While many of his contributions
to the Newburg Community included assisting and establishing a little league
softball team-“the Broadmoor Bears”; volunteering as a recreational counselor
at Newburg Park youth camp; and, establishing numerous positive and,
construction activities for the community’s youth; Bob most impacted this
community through his active leadership and participation as a staff member of
the “Newburg Boys Club”.
During his tenure with this club, he, along with the
late George Unseld and their respective late wives, embarked on several
creative fundraising ventures to insure the club’s viability and keeping
membership dues to a minimum. These
fundraisers included operating a Saturday morning movie theater in the Newburg “Elementary”
School cafeteria, weekend sock hops, raffles and concession stand sells during
the softball games. Through their tireless
efforts, the Boys Club eventually became affiliated with the Salvation Army
Boys and Girls. He remained active with
the club until his retirement at age 65.
In addition
to his contributions at the Boys and Girls Club, Mr. Burks served on the
Newburg Community Council, helped create and organize baseball and softball
leagues annually, physically maintained all three ball fields, coached and
organized local softball teams, assisted in the creation and organization of
Newburg Day Annual Community Celebration, operated the concession stands
on both sides of the park and served as a mentor and positive example.
After his official retirement, Bob continued to be an
active presence in the community; assisting and supporting segments of the upcoming
Newburg Master Plan and providing input and participation in the annual Newburg
Day festivities until his death at age 87.
