Eastern Parkway water
main replacement
Phase one of Louisville Water’s historic water main improvement project is nearing the end. The 48-inch main has been restored from Eastern Parkway and Beargrass Creek near the Medical Arts Building, to Cherokee Parkway and Grinstead Drive. All roads are open. The final step of this phase is restoration, which includes sidewalk and curb repair, grading and seeding of yards, and paving. The paving is from curb to curb of sections along Eastern Parkway, Willow Avenue and Cherokee Parkway where we've worked. The restoration work begins in April and is expected to be complete by June.
For more information on the project, go to http://louisvillewater.com/project-highlights/eastern-pkwy-project
Bridge replacement underway on Eastern Parkway
Eastern Parkway has been reduced to one lane in each direction
between Poplar Level Road and Royal Avenue (mile markers 5.5 to 5.9). Traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes so crews
can begin demolition of the old bridge on the existing eastbound lanes of
Eastern Parkway.
One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction
utilizing the existing westbound lanes. Short intermittent closures may occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement
weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and
travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. You can also get
traffic information for the District 5 counties at facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5 and twitter.com/KYTCDistrict5 .
Residents - please
provide input to the MSD Critical Repair and Reinvestment Plan
From MSD:
Flooded roadways, destroyed homes and raw sewage overflows are
reminders that our city’s ability to thrive depends on the most basic public
health and safety protection systems – wastewater, stormwater and flood
protection. MSD has completed an extensive analysis of these systems, and input
is needed from the community to determine how soon the critical
projects should be completed.
While Louisville can no longer avoid renewing and restoring its
vital systems, the difficult truth is the solutions come with a price tag of
$4.3 billion over the next 20 years. This includes almost $500 million to
finish the remaining Consent Decree projects to meet the federal order to
reduce sewer overflows. Recognizing the magnitude of the impact on
ratepayers and the community, MSD is embarking on a wide-reaching community
conversation.
Dialogue is underway through presentations with community
groups, business leaders, neighborhood associations, and faith-based
organizations - including the District 10 Advisory Board.
A dedicated website can be found at http://www.louisvillemsd.org/CriticalRepairPlan that
includes:
- A video message offering an
overview of the challenge and the opportunity to engage
- Brief summaries of the six
categories of risk to public health and safety including local pictures of
real consequences
- Links to the full Critical
Repair & Reinvestment Plan for review (hard copies of Volume 1 have
also been distributed to every public library in the county through March
1)
- A comment form to provide
direct input on the Plan (http://louisvillemsd.org/community-input-form)

LG&E rate case settlement
Earlier
this year, when LG&E requested significant gas and electric rate increases
– including an enormous increase in monthly basic service charges - Metro
Council urged Louisville Metro to intervene in the case.
A resolution, which noted that “increased fixed
charges sought by LG&E have the potential to undermine energy efficiency
and disproportionately impact low-income Louisville Metro residents,” passed 20-0. Louisville Metro intervened in the case.
Yesterday’s announcement of a proposed settlement in the case is
a significant improvement from LG&E’s request. The overall increase is
substantially reduced and the monthly basic service charge increases are
slashed. Under the proposed settlement agreement, LG&E agreed to a
basic service charge increase of less than $4 per month next year, as
opposed to the requested increase of almost $22 per month.
Louisville Metro should be at the table whenever a utility seeks
an increase in its charges to our residents. That’s particularly
important when a utility is proposing an increase in monthly basic service
charges that disproportionately affects low income individuals and reduces
incentives for energy conservation.
The agreement is
subject to approval by the Public Service Commission. The PSC is scheduled to
consider the case on May 9.

LMAS Pets of the Week - Cinco and Porter
Cinco is three years old and he's an attentive fellow. He's
curious and wants to learn. He's food motivated, which helps with training.
After being shown just twice, he understood how to walk a figure eight through the
legs of a Louisville Metro Animal Services volunteer.
Cinco has a happy
disposition and is obedient. He came in as a stray found in the streets, so his
coat looks a little rough right now, but good food and less stress will pretty
him up! He's a really sweet and willing boy. He'll make a fun companion. He
wants ALL of your attention! Cinco prefers to be the king pet of the house. He
would do best in a home without other pets. Cinco walks nicely on the leash so
you two can have lots of enjoyable walks. Cinco is FREE to an approved adopter
and has neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. To meet this sweet guy, stop by
the LMAS Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Road).
|
One-year-old Porter is the friendliest kitty you will ever
meet! He is also, beautiful. Porter looks like a Dalmatian in kitty form. He
has a white coat with black spots. If walking by his kennel, Porter will reach
his paws out to you to say, “Hello!” He loves people, especially people who
will give him a nice ear rub. Porter is a very curious guy. He likes to look
around the room and take-in every detail. Porter is FIV positive, which is
similar to HIV in humans, but don’t let that dissuade you from adopting him!
Cats with FIV can live very long lives. They just need swift action at the
slightest sign of a cold, due to their compromised immune systems. Help Porter
find his way out of the shelter and adopt him for FREE at the LMAS Animal House
Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Road) He has been neutered, vaccinated and
microchipped.

Help Alley Cat Advocates
help unowned community cats while reducing taxpayer costs, euthanasia
Alley Cat Advocates (ACA) has received a grant of $58,900 from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). This generous grant will help ACA to expand outreach to provide spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and veterinary care to more community cats this year.
"The ASPCA is a key partner in our success," said Karen Little, executive director and co-founder of Alley Cat Advocates. "Their support will help us increase the total number of spay/neuter surgeries at our organization this year. These efforts reduce the cost to the taxpayer, overcrowded shelters and animal euthanasia."
In 2012, the ASPCA selected Louisville to participate in their Community Partner program. Through this program, the ASPCA has worked with ACA, Louisville Metro Animal Services and the Kentucky Humane Society. The ASPCA has provided support and tools to help partner agencies achieve their shared goals of reducing the intake of animals into shelters and increasing live outcomes.
Thunder over Louisville - consider taking a bus or a bike
TARC is increasing service into downtown Louisville and
designating five post-event boarding areas for Thunder Over Louisville on
Saturday, April 22. The service plan mirrors TARC service for Thunder in recent
years.
Post-event boarding in downtown Louisville will be restricted to
five locations, all within blocks of the waterfront. Buses will operate until
11:00 p.m. at several locations, click here for a complete list. Due to
traffic, buses have limited access on downtown streets after the event. The boarding locations are designed to keep buses out of heavy traffic as much
as possible and to get people home as quickly as possible.
Beginning at 3:30 p.m., on the day of the fireworks, more buses
will be added on routes serving downtown, improving the frequency of bus
arrival times at stops and adding capacity. However, as the event draws closer,
downtown routes may be delayed due to police barricades and heavy pedestrian
traffic.
Regular TARC fares will apply. A one-way fare is $1.75 or 80
cents for passengers over the age of 65, riders with disabilities and ages
6-17. TARC ID is required for reduced fare. Children under the age of 5 ride
free.
Easy trip planning, maps and schedules are
available at www.ridetarc.org, the ‘Transit App’ (free
download) or Google Maps. TARC customer service can be reached at
502-585-1234; TTY 502-213-3240.
Bike to Thunder
Bicycling 4 Louisville will provide bike parking at Thunder Over Louisville.
They will be setting up stations at six
locations -- three in Louisville and three in Jeffersonville.
