Tony Parrott, executive director of MSD, gave a presentation on the critical repairs and reinvestment study to the District Advisory Board. Councilman Mulvihill discussed March for Meals on WAVE 3 Tuesday

WAVE Country

Tuesday, Councilman Pat Mulvihill, Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith and Faith Aeilts, Social Services Policy and Advocacy Manager with the Department of Community Services joined anchor Julian Glover on "WAVE Country" to talk about March for Meals, a month-long event to build support for Meals on Wheels.

Councilman Mulvihill, who has personally delivered Meals on Wheels to seniors, said that while the nutrition is obviously important, the personal interaction is also beneficial to homebound elderly people.

In Louisville Metro, meals are provided to qualified individuals, age sixty or older, who are homebound due to illness. A social worker from the Senior Nutrition Program conducts an in-home visit to make this assessment. But there's a waiting list to accommodate the ever growing need in this community. Those in the greatest physical, social and economic need are given priority as a vacancy becomes available.  Click here to refer a senior.

This March, hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs across the country will reach out to their communities to build the support to enable them to deliver nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to America's seniors all year long. By volunteering, donating or speaking out, you can ensure the seniors in your neighborhood can live more healthy, happy and independent lives at home, where they want to be.

Please volunteer for Meals on Wheels - there are many deserving seniors in our community who need this vital program. You can make a huge difference in your community by investing a couple hours a week, 10 a.m. to noon.

Contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Tiffany Reed, at 574-6420 or Todd Adams at 574-6917.

Yard waste collection to resume Monday, March 13

Yard waste collection in the Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) is suspended but will resume on March 13. During the suspension period, citizens should not put yard waste out for collection. Any yard waste problems should be reported as usual to MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000.

Crews from the Solid Waste Division of Metro Public Works diverted their efforts from yard waste collection to litter cleanup in response to the growing litter problem along Louisville's streets and roads, including interstate highways.

Once mowing season begins, litter abatement along the interstates in Louisville will be performed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet as it is every year. Metro crews will then focus solely on arterial and connector surface roads in the city.

Alley Cat Advocates offer free spay/neuter for community cats thanks to PetSmart Charities

    Alley Cat Advocates

Alley Cat Advocates has spayed or neutered more than 35,000 stray cats in the Louisville area, reducing the number of cats that end up in our municipal shelter by more than 63 percent since 2009.

We have recently received additional grant funding from PetSmart Charities to allow us to spay or neuter more than 5,000 cats.

Working through the ACA Neighborhoods Program, cat caretakers who live in Jefferson County zip codes 40208, 40209, 40213, 40214, 40215, 40216, 40217, 40219, 40258 and 40272 are eligible for spay/neuter services for unowned community cats at no cost.

These zip codes are targeted because Louisville Metro Animal Services sees the highest intake of community cats from these areas due to cat overpopulation and breeding. PetSmart Charities has been a partner with Alley Cat Advocates since 2010.

      7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Parkhill Community Center

The impact that popular music has on our children's behavior and emotions is more than we will ever begin to imagine. Music provides the freedom for our youth to relax, be comfortable and feel original.

Metro Parks wants to recognize that individuality and hone in on the history of greatest singers, songwriters and musicians that have come before us. "100 Years of Music: A Tribute to African American Musicians" will showcase youth performances in singing, dancing and lip-syncing to music performed by famous African-American musicians from the 1900's to today!

Admission is $3 per person. For more information please contact Parkhill Community Center at 502-637-3044.
