Sustainability Story: Bike Share Coming Soon

bike share

Bike share programs - in which riders pay a fee to check out a bike for an allotted time and then return the bike to the same site or another site at or near their destination –  are emerging as a cost effective and sustainable way to expand transit options.  By providing a public bicycle rental program, cities are realizing economic, environmental and public health benefits.  The programs have boomed in recent years. WFPL reports that there are “more than 1,000 cities operating or planning a bike share program. And nearby cities of Nashville, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton and Indianapolis have their own programs.”

Louisville’s bike share program, with bikes likely stationed across the downtown area — stretching from Butchertown to the eastern edge of Russell and south to the University of Louisville campus – is coming soon.  Bikes are being tested and the program could be ready by summer.

Read more about bike sharing in Louisville in this WFPL story: http://wfpl.org/public-bike-share-could-roll-into-city-by-summer-officials-say/.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge

4,000 Trees to be Given Away – March 3 & 4

BIA

The Home, Garden & Remodeling Show at the Kentucky Exposition Center, South Wing B and C, presented by Champion Windows and sponsored by LG&E, will not only include access to over 300 exhibitors but will also give guests the opportunity to take home a free tree to plant. The Tree Sapling Giveaway presented by L&N Federal Credit Union is part of a city-wide initiative, supported by the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville (BIA), to increase Louisville Metro’s tree canopy.

All 4,000 trees that will be given away are native to Kentucky and were grown in a Kentucky Division of Forestry nursery just hours from Louisville. Guests who take a tree home will be given instructions on how to plant and care for the tree sapling.

Tickets for the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show are $10 for adults and $9 for senior citizens. Children 15 and under are free. Military members may present their military ID at the ticket booth to gain free entry. A buy one get one free coupon is available on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/LouisvilleHomeShow.
