The annual program that helps prevent low income residents of Louisville from being disconnected from utility services begins Monday, Jan. 9, 2017.
LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, is administered by Louisville Metro Department of Community Services. The Crisis Phase of LIHEAP will run from Jan. 9 - March 31, or until available funds have been expended, whichever comes first.
Residents wishing to apply must make an appointment in advance utilizing the new, automated appointment system. The toll free service is now available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Applicants must be Jefferson County residents with a household income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty guidelines (e.g. for a household of four, the gross monthly income cannot exceed $2,633.00).
For the Crisis Component, clients must meet the criteria listed above and be in a crisis situation involving imminent loss of energy including one of the following:
- Must have received a brown bill, disconnection notice from their utility service provider, or
- Must have an eviction notice if their utilities are included in the rent, or
- Have four or fewer days’ worth of fuel oil, propane, kerosene, wood or coal available, or
- Must be within ten days or less of running out of prepaid electric service.
LIHEAP applications will be completed at the time of the appointment at one of the six locations listed below. Please note that 810 Barret Avenue is closed and is not a location this year.

FREE post-holiday electronics drop-off service is available at our Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue. Drop-off will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on these three Saturdays: January 7, January 14 and January 21.

 Louisville Metro Animal Services is offering free adoptions for cats and large dogs (40 pounds and over), thanks to everyone to had their pets photographed with Santa Claus over the holidays.
Friends of Metro Animal Services, the non-profit group that raises money for LMAS hosted the Pet Photos With Santa events in December. They donated $1,000 to be used for waiving adoption fees, beginning Tuesday.

Effective March 1, 2017, all property located in Louisville Metro and occupied or offered for occupancy in exchange for money or any other consideration must be registered with Louisville Metro Government. Registration itself is free and the information required includes the rental unit street address along with current contact information of the owner and managing operator.
New owners must register within thirty days of any ownership transfer. Any change in contact information must be updated on the registry within thirty days of said change.

West Louisville has over 60,000 residents, who need convenient,
affordable options for shopping. West Louisville residents need employment
opportunities. And, West Louisville residents pledge their support for the
Wal-Mart Superstore #6391 at West Broadway and 18th Street.
Wal-Mart's decision to cancel plans for the new supercenter leaves
residents in West Louisville without access to affordable goods and services
that many other communities take for granted.
We, in Southwest Louisville, have certainly seen the economic
impact that development can have on a community. As our development momentum
grows along Dixie Highway, please consider supporting our neighbors and fellow

 With the arrival of cold weather, Louisville Water encourages customers to take some time and prepare their home for winter.
“Wrap your presents and wrap your pipes” is Louisville Water’s customer information campaign that focuses on how to avoid water pipes freezing and a costly mess. “Wrap Your Presents and Wrap Your Pipes” includes visuals and videos that illustrate how to prevent freezing water pipes inside the home. The materials are located at LouisvilleWater.com.
Each year during extreme cold weather, Louisville Water receives thousands of calls from customers whose internal water lines have frozen and/or burst. While we don’t maintain the internal plumbing, we can offer tips to avoid a costly mess.
Before cold weather lingers, focus on eliminating the amount of cold air coming into the home around water pipes.
- Wrap exposed pipes with insulating material purchased at a hardware store
- If the home has a crawl space, cover the outside vents to prevent winter winds from freezing the pipes
- If the house has a slab foundation, keep the garage door closed. Some water pipes are located under concrete floors in the garage.
During extreme cold weather, consider running a small, steady stream of water from a cold water faucet in an area of the home where pipes are exposed or have frozen in the past. The movement of the water will help to prevent the water from freezing. Also, open cabinet doors to allow heat to surround the pipes.
Finally, regardless of the weather, locate the water shut-off valve. This is the valve that controls the flow of water into the house. It’s usually located near the hot water heater, in the basement, or in a utility closet. Turning off the water in the event of a burst pipe can minimize the damage. Once you locate the valve, tag it with a waterproof hanger or a ribbon. Louisville Water has free tags for customers at its downtown office and at Brownsboro Hardware.

 The Neighborhood Institute is a leadership education program
designed to equip neighborhood leaders with skills and resources needed to
initiate positive change in the community through their neighborhood,
homeowner, and condo associations. Classes meet every Thursday, 6:00 - 8:30PM
at Center For Neighborhoods Offices - 507 South Third Street, for 12
consecutive weeks (January 26th, 2017 – April 13th, 2017), followed by a
Graduation Celebration. Dinner is provided each week. There is no charge to
attend, but space is limited, and advance registration is required.
Applications will be accepted through January 13th, 2017.
The Neighborhood Institute Spring 2017 is open to all
neighborhoods, Metro Council Districts, and the whole community. Please

 Located at 11311 Mitchell Hill Road, GO Ape’s first treetop adventure course (zip lines,
obstacles and more!) in Kentucky is just minutes from downtown
Louisville in Jefferson Memorial Forest. Jefferson Memorial Forest is
a woodland tribute to area veterans and a treasure to all who visit. Designated
as an Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest has approximately 6,500 acres of
steep slopes covered with mature, second growth hardwood trees, and is the
largest municipal urban forest in the United States.
More than just a canopy tour, the Go Ape Jefferson Memorial
Forest course is made up of numerous rope ladders, 39 exciting crossings to
include the Log Swing, Wobbly Ladder, Japanese Bridge, Plank
Crossing, Yamazoe Steps, 2 Tarzan swings and 5 zip lines. Overall, there
are 5 individual sections within the course, each section taking you higher
into the forest canopy and finishing with a zip line more exciting than the
previous one!

Spend a day at Jefferson Memorial Forest to enjoy all
the park has to offer. Before or after your Go Ape adventure, check out
the park’s 5.5 acre fishing lake at Tom Wallace Lake. From Tom Wallace Lake
there is access to 35 miles of hiking, equestrian, and wheel-chair accessible
trails as well as a children’s playground and picnic shelters. The Forest also
has a Welcome Center for trail maps and hiking supplies, and the Horine
Conference Center is available for rent for business retreats, meetings, and weddings.
If you want to hang around for a day or two, you can even pitch a tent in
the Forest’s campground which accommodates both families and groups.
