Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular Opens

 In what has become the must-see event of the Halloween season regionally, the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular opened for the fourth consecutive year in South Louisville’s Iroquois Park.

Councilwoman Welch joined Mayor Greg Fischer, Parks Assistant Director Marty Storch, Southwest Dream Team President Vince Jarboe, Metro Parks Foundation Vice Chair Brooke Pardue, and Travis Reckner, Passion For Pumpkins to officially open the 2016 JOL Spectacular.  5,000 artistically carved pumpkins will be on display nightly from Oct. 13 through Nov. 6. The pumpkins will illuminate a 1/4-mile trail adjacent to the Iroquois Amphitheater, and Metro Parks officials estimate up to 90,000 people will visit.

Glengarry Peace Walk Brings Neighbors Together

Had a very successful LMPD Peace Walk in Glengarry Tuesday evening.

Major Frank Hardison, Commander 3rd Division, joined our largest group of neighbors yet! We started with a prayer for these neighbors who lost a young life 2 weeks ago to a hit & run driver. 

Thanks to all who participated!

Library Director, Jim Blandford led  Mayor Fischer, Councilwoman Madonna Flood District 24,  Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey-Welch D 13,  and the Kentucky Commissioner of Libraries on a hard hat tour of the 40,000-square-foot South Central Regional Library

under construction in South Louisville's District 24 last Friday. 

Located on Jefferson Blvd. across from Jefferson Mall, when completed, it will serve more than 160,000 residents in the area and will be twice the size of the existing Okolona Library branch.

Free Shredding & Drug Toss

Saturday, October 29

Louisville residents are invited to bring unneeded documents and prescription drugs to be shredded and disposed of at a free event on October 29, 2016. The Drug Toss/Shredding Event is sponsored by Metro Public Works, Metro Police, and Metro Council.

Businesses may not participate in this event. All paper materials will be shredded on site and recycled. Shredding donated by the Louisville Branch of Shred-It Louisville. The Drug Toss will be done as a drive-through event

  • 1032 Phillips Lane, across from the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.


Paving In District 13 This week

Below is the paving project scheduled for the week of October 17, 2016 in District 13. The schedule is subject to change due to weather and operational factors.

Roadway improvements will begin on Blevins Gap Road from Bearcamp Road to Lonesome Hollow Road .  Daily closures will occur on these roads.

    LIHEAP Early Registration for Elderly and Disabled Residents

    LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a federally funded program that provides financial assistance to help low income residents pay utility bills. The Subsidy component of LIHEAP begins Nov. 1, 2016. 

    Pre-registration opportunities will be offered beginning Oct. 3rd for those Jefferson County residents who are on a fixed income, and who are elderly (age 60 or over) or disabled receiving Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits.  These early registration events take place at 14 community centers and senior centers across the community.

     Public Works hosted a meeting of the Reuse Committee at the Southwest Regional Public Library. The committee is a community wide citizen effort begun in February to design a strategy to help cut down on the use of landfills by reusing goods and materials as much as possible.

    RiverLink Accepting Accounts for Tolls

    Tolling is expected to begin in December, sometime after cross-river capacity is added to the system. You can open a personal account online, by phone or in person. Customer service centers are located at 400 East Main Street in Louisville and 103 Quartermaster Court in Jeffersonville. The centers are open 7 am - 7 pm M – F. They are also open 8 am - 2 pm Saturday.
