5K Race, Outdoor Adventure, Guided Hikes, Food Trucks & Music Highlight Event
Families can enjoy fall color at Jefferson Memorial Forest during the Wilderness Louisville Forest Adventure on Saturday, October 15 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Participants can get a pumpkin, take a hay ride, and hike trails of various lengths through the Forest at the height of fall color. The event is free to the public.
Activities include a children’s nature exploration area, Alpine Tower climbs, pumpkin decorating, hayrides, archery, and fishing. The Forest’s volunteer trail team and staff will lead hikes at various skill levels and introduce visitors to the native plant gardens, bird blind and animal exhibits.
The event will also feature a 5K trail run through the forested knobs starting at 9 a.m.
Crews from MAC Construction,
contracted by the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District, will begin work on a
2.12-mile section of the Louisville Loop Oct. 3 resulting in closures of the
trail for up to a month.
MAC will be working to repair
and repave the section of the paved path stretching from the parking area
access path at Riverview
Park to the access point at Bethany Lane.
Some landmarks along the closed
section include Riverview Park, Mike Linnig’s restaurant and Riverside, the
Farnsley-Moremen Landing. The project will be completed no later than Nov. 2.

 n what has become the must-see event of the Halloween season,
the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular is
returning for the fourth consecutive year to south Louisville’s Iroquois Park,
where 5,000 artistically carved pumpkins will greet visitors from Oct. 13
through Nov. 6. The pumpkins will illuminate a 1/3-mile trail adjacent to the
Iroquois Amphitheater, and Metro Parks officials estimate up to 90,000 people
will visit.
The trail is open from dusk until 11 p.m., Sunday through
Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets range from
$9 to $15, with discounts for seniors and children 12 and under. Proceeds from
the event benefit the Louisville Parks Foundation.

Individual tickets may be purchased in advance for specific
nights at the Iroquois Amphitheater Box Office or online at www.jackolanternlouisville.com. Visitors
are also encouraged to use the hashtag #502Pumpkins
on social media to share images or experiences they enjoy while touring the
show.
Tickets for groups of 25 or more can be purchased in advance by
calling 502/368-5063,
or in person at the Iroquois Amphitheater Box Office between 9 a.m. and 4:00
p.m. Monday – Friday, and Saturdays from 12 – 4 p.m. The Ticket booths will
open at 5 p.m. beginning October 13.
Group tickets are discounted at $10 Sunday through Thursday and
$12 on Friday and Saturday.
The event is held rain
or shine. No refunds will be given, but advanced purchased tickets may be
exchanged for another day.
The Spirit of Jefferson will return to Riverview Park in Southwest Louisville on Sunday, October 23rd! The Steamboat will set sail for two cruises leaving from Riverview Park (formerly the Greenwood Boat Docks at 8202 Greenwood Road).
This is a free event but remember that seating is limited for the cruises. To reserve your spot in advance, you can stop by Southwest Community Ministries at 8504 Terry Road during their regular business hours. A $5 minimum donation per seat is suggested to reserve your spot. Those wanting to attend can also board the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cruises are at 1:30 pm at 4:00 pm with boarding beginning one half hour before each. Please contact the District 14 office at 502.574.1114 for more details or questions. We hope that you can attend this special event and help us to support Southwest Community Ministries.
The Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue provides a means for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents to properly dispose of tires and household bulk waste including metals, appliances, electronics, tree limbs and stumps up to three feet in diameter, unbagged yard waste, construction debris and furniture. Up to three household junk items may be dropped off at no charge per day. If there are more than three items a fee will be charged according to the schedule below.

The Fall Community-Wide Cleanup will be taking place on Saturday, October 22nd, 2016. So mark your calendars now! Online registration will open on Monday, August 15th so be sure to sign up early. All cleanup teams will receive bags and gloves at no cost, and the first 5,000 volunteers to register will also receive a free t-shirt.
Neighborhoods can hold their own cleanups at any point throughout the year and we can provide gloves and bags for each Neighborhood Cleanup. We will work with Solid Waste Management to have the collected litter bags picked up. Give us a call at (502) 574-2613 about two weeks prior to your event to schedule your cleanup and for information about getting supplies.

 Located at 11311 Mitchell Hill Road, GO Ape’s first treetop adventure course (zip lines,
obstacles and more!) in Kentucky is just minutes from downtown
Louisville in Jefferson Memorial Forest. Jefferson Memorial Forest is
a woodland tribute to area veterans and a treasure to all who visit. Designated
as an Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest has approximately 6,500 acres of
steep slopes covered with mature, second growth hardwood trees, and is the
largest municipal urban forest in the United States.
More than just a canopy tour, the Go Ape Jefferson Memorial
Forest course is made up of numerous rope ladders, 39 exciting crossings to
include the Log Swing, Wobbly Ladder, Japanese Bridge, Plank
Crossing, Yamazoe Steps, 2 Tarzan swings and 5 zip lines. Overall, there
are 5 individual sections within the course, each section taking you higher
into the forest canopy and finishing with a zip line more exciting than the
previous one!

Spend a day at Jefferson Memorial Forest to enjoy all
the park has to offer. Before or after your Go Ape adventure, check out
the park’s 5.5 acre fishing lake at Tom Wallace Lake. From Tom Wallace Lake
there is access to 35 miles of hiking, equestrian, and wheel-chair accessible
trails as well as a children’s playground and picnic shelters. The Forest also
has a Welcome Center for trail maps and hiking supplies, and the Horine
Conference Center is available for rent for business retreats, meetings, and weddings.
If you want to hang around for a day or two, you can even pitch a tent in
the Forest’s campground which accommodates both families and groups.
