Louisville Water Company has presented modified plans for a stand-by electric generator and access road at its Crescent Hill Water Treatment Plant on Frankfort Avenue.
At a meeting on Tuesday night, Louisville Water announced that it had modified the design of the proposed building, adding stonework and other features to make it resemble a building on the property which dates to 1926. In addition, the proposed building will now have a more environmentally-friendly white roof and a proposed fence has been pushed back from Frankfort Avenue to allow more accessible green space along the sidewalk. Those changes were suggested by neighbors at an earlier public meeting and in follow-up communications. In addition, an exit-only drive across from Hillcrest Avenue is now proposed to be constructed of historic concrete mix, rather than asphalt. The changes are projected to add nearly $800,000 to the cost of the project.

Louisville Water will continue to formulate plans before presenting them for a Community Facility Review at the Planning Commission. An earlier review was postponed at my request to allow for public input, including at the two public meetings. The date of the Community Facility Review, which will be open to the public, has not been determined but will be announced in an upcoming eNews.

It’s time to make your plans for the 2016 Louisville Solar Tour on Saturday, October 8. The activities begin with an overview of solar basics, energy efficiency and the benefits of net metering from 9:30 to 11:00 am at Bellarmine University’s Pasteur Hall, followed by a self-guided vehicle or bicycle tour (click here for bicycle tour Eventbrite tickets or here for Facebook event page). Tour existing solar installations to see how Louisville families and businesses are harnessing free energy from the sun to generate electricity, warm and cool their homes, heat water, charge their electric cars, and slash monthly utility bills. You can also hear from homeowners, businesses and solar installers about the costs, processes and economic and environmental benefits of solar at a “meet-the-installers” event at D9’s Apocalypse Brew Works, 1612 Mellwood Avenue, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. The day ends with a Solar Kentucky Benefit Concert, beginning at 8:00 pm at Haymarket Whiskey Bar, 331 East Market Street.

LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a federally funded program that provides financial assistance to help low income residents pay utility bills. The subsidy component of LIHEAP begins Nov. 1, 2016.
Pre-registration opportunities will be offered beginning Oct. 3rd for those Jefferson County residents who are on a fixed income, and who are elderly (age 60 or over) or disabled receiving Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits. These early registration events take place at 14 community centers and senior centers across the community.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 22nd for a cleanup of Frankfort Avenue between Mellwood and Story Avenues in the Butchertown Neighborhood. Volunteers should plan to meet at 8:30 a.m. at Frankfort and Mellwood for coffee and breakfast sandwiches, and the cleanup will officially begin at 9:00 a.m. We’ll supply bags, gloves, and t-shirts on a first-come, first-serve basis.
