Making Frequent Headlines.
Perpetrators and their defenders have taken to describing these crimes as “mistakes” or a moment of bad judgment, particularly when committed by younger men. Is sexual abuse or assault in any form, less important than perpetrators beginning college on schedule?
How can we move forward?
Let’s agree to be mindful of our words. It is not helpful nor is it accurate to say a perpetrator “ruined” a victim. Yes, these crimes are serious, harmful and damaging to victims’ physical and emotional well-being. No, targets of this criminal behavior are not “ruined.”
Let’s agree to prioritize safety and justice for victims of sex crimes as we do other violent crimes.
Let’s agree to offer our respect and support to those who speak out and to those who remain silent.
