On Tuesday, June 7, at 6:00 p.m., MSD will host a public meeting on the Clifton Heights Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Basin to be built off Drescher Bridge Avenue. This meeting is at the American Printing House for the Blind, 1839 Frankfort Avenue. Google Fiber Progressing

google fiber

The effort to attract Google Fiber to Louisville is moving into its final stages. On Tuesday, May 31, a Metro Council committee approved an ordinance granting a franchise for Google Fiber to operate.  The latest ordinance follows Metro Council approval of two ordinances in February.  Google Fiber praised Metro Council's effort then, saying it "paves the way for its residents having access to faster and better broadband."

At Tuesday's meeting, Google Fiber representative Lewis Roberts said, "We are thoroughly looking forward to having the opportunity to build and deploy a fiber optic to the home network...and really doing something special here in Louisville, Kentucky."  Business First recently wrote that Google Fiber has meant "better or expanded service and lower prices" in markets it enters.  The story, which also notes Louisville Metro Council's efforts,  is here:  www.bizj.us/1mapli.

The full Metro Council will vote on the Google Fiber franchise ordinance on June 9.  To sign up for more information about Google Fiber in Louisville, go here: https://fiber.google.com/cities/louisville/

Reading is Magical at the Library

Reading is Magical

With the largest circulation branch in the Louisville Free Public Library system (St. Matthews Eline) and a children's area that includes a castle (Crescent Hill), D9 residents know that "Reading is Magical."  But this summer there are even more opportunities for younger readers with LFPL's Summer Reading Program.  Presented by the Library Foundation, the free, 10-week program encourages summer reading for newborns to twelfth graders by offering prizes and incentives.  The program runs through August 6.

You're invited to a kickoff Saturday, June 4, 10 am- 2 pm at the Main Library, 301 York Street.  Or stop by any LFPL branch to sign up. You can also learn more information and sign up online: www.LFPL.org/SummerReading

Sustainability Story: Reuse Symposium – June 3

reuse

A couple of weeks ago, we featured Supplies Over Seas and its important “reuse” efforts.  We noted then that while much of the sustainability focus is on recycling, it is actually one of the last steps you should take to minimize waste - and that reuse is one of the first.

The Partnership for a Green City (http://archive.jefferson.kyschools.us/projects/greencity/index.html) and Metro Public Works are teaming up for a symposium TOMORROW, June 3, on reuse opportunities that will minimize disposal of items that are still beneficial.  Several D9 organizations will be featured, including Supplies Over Seas (http://www.suppliesoverseas.org/) and Good Garbage (http://www.goodgarbage.org/ ).  There will also be variety of reuse demonstrations.  More information about the symposium and an opportunity to purchase tickets (which are $25, including lunch) is here:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/reuse-summit-tickets-24516801413.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge
