Please join me in taking a moment this Memorial Day to be thankful to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Help Shape the 10-Year Solid Waste Plan - Short Survey!

solid

Louisville residents can help shape the city’s 10-year Solid Waste Master Plan by taking a 5-minute confidential online survey. The survey, which seeks information about how citizens handle waste and what they pay to dispose of it, is available on the Metro Public Works website. The survey will remain open through June 30.

Citizens may also take part in shaping the solid waste plan by attending public meetings to be held around the city in June. Information from the survey and public meetings will impact every household in Louisville/Jefferson County long into the future.

Development of the 10-year Solid Waste Master Plan got underway last fall. The plan is focused on Mayor Greg Fischer’s goal of diverting 90 percent of the community’s solid waste away from landfills by the year 2042.

The planning process is led by Orlando, Florida based MSW Consultants in partnership with Cascadia Consulting Group (Seattle, Washington) and Abbe & Associates (Alameda, California) under a $350,000 contract with Metro Public Works. MSW is a management consulting firm specializing in the waste and recycling industry.

Meeting schedule:

WHEN: June 9 at 6:00 pm

WHERE: Southwest Public Library, 9725 Dixie Highway Louisville, KY 40272

There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Memorial Day, Monday May 30. Collection through the week will be delayed by one day because of the holiday.

Also, the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue, along with all staffed recycling centers and the Haz Bin hazardous waste disposal site, will be closed on Saturday May 28 in recognition of the holiday and closed on Monday as usual. A complete list of the sites and regular operating hours is at louisvilleky.gov/government/public-works/services/recycling.

Do You Own a Business? Register to be a Metro Vendor!

ve

Citing an effort to increase its ability to help small businesses and “buy local” more often, Metro Louisville announced today that it has added a new vendor portal on the Division of Purchasing’s page of the city website.

Local businesses interested in registering can submit information through the new portal. Louisville Metro agency buyers and Purchasing Division staff will be able to utilize the business information primarily when seeking purchasing opportunities below $20,000. Any purchases above $20,000 require, by state law, a competitive bid process.

In order for Louisville Metro to procure services and products, the business must be registered and compliant with the Revenue Commission and Human Relations Commission. Some common purchases by the city are construction, painting, roofing, pest control and a variety of business services.

Louisville Metro encourages and assists small business development and growth through the work of its Small Business Development staff and partnerships with other resource providers in the city.

Submitting a Vendor Interest Form is not a guarantee for doing business with Louisville Metro Government, nor is it a bid notification system. The portal is a method for presenting local business capabilities and qualifications directly to decision-makers across all Metro agencies.

To complete the Vendor Interest Form, local business owners should visit

    May 2016 BBB Hot Topics!

    bbb

    1.    A local BBB employee received a fake “notice to appear in court”email. The email appears to be from District Court, and informs the recipient to appear in court for a case hearing, then asks the recipient to click on an attachment for more information. Don’t click it! You could end up with a virus on your computer!

    2.    Beware of deceptive flyers that may be posted on your front door at this time of the year. Local residents have been receiving some of these deceptive marketing pieces. The flyers often state, “sorry we missed you,” and tell the resident to call a phone number. Sometimes these are less-than-reputable companies or downright scams. Check out BBB Business Reviews at bbb.org.

    3.    Also this time of year, beware of scammers selling fake magazine subscriptions. The seller may claim he/she is raising money for a school, charity, or veterans. The subscriptions are usually three times the typical price, but the “money goes to a good cause,” so you purchase it. Months pass, and your magazine never arrives, and the charity never gets any money. The fundraiser is a fake

    4.    Businesses – beware of overpayment scams. A local business that deals in western gear, was contacted by a scammer who wanted to buy a saddle. The scammer sent a cashier’s check, with an overpayment that was supposed to be wired to someone that was being paid to “ship the item.” Don’t fall for it.

    5.    It’s a Dropbox phishing con. You receive an email that appears to come from Dropbox. It includes the logo and and the subject line states: "Drop Box - Pending Documents" or "<Contact Name> used Dropbox to share a file with you." The email instructs you to click a link to access the shared file. Don't fall for it! The link downloads malware to your computer!

    6.    The Governor of the Bank of England has not set aside $6.5 million for you. It’s the latest version of a Nigerian Scam. Victims are told they could receive a large sum of money, if they pay some fees upfront. To make it appear legit, the email comes with what appears to be the Governor’s personal identity card.

    7.    Scammers are contacting individuals who filed for bankruptcy, spoofing caller ID with the name and number of the person’s attorney (which is available in public records). The scammer poses as an associate of the attorney with news about a problem with paperwork and an unpaid debt. The victim is told they will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately through wire transfer. This is a scam.

    8.    There are reports in several states that scammers are phoning parents, claiming they’ve kidnapped their child. The scammers aggressively demand immediate payment of a ransom. Victims report hearing the sound of a child screaming in the background. The scammer insists the victim stays on their cellphone while they get cash and wire it to them.

    9.    Don’t fall for fake Facebook comments. Scammers create an account with an official sounding, security-related name, so victims think the comment has come directly from FB. The comment, which states, “your account has been reported by others for abuse,” warns the user that his/her account is about to be disabled. A link redirects the FB user to a fake FB page, which phishes for personal information.

    10.  Beware of these Memorial Day Scams: Fake charities raise funds on behalf of military organizations; con artists pose as the Veterans Administration, contacting vets saying they need to update their credit, bank, or other records with the VA; and, scammers offer “instant approval” military loans with hefty interest rates and fees.
