The Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition will offer free Naloxone (also referred to by its brand name as Narcan®) kits and a training session on how to administer it to reverse the effects of overdose from heroin and other opioid drugs and prevent death. The free training is open to the general public including first responders and to the family and friends of those who use heroin or other opioid drugs. The training will be held TONIGHT, Thursday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Barret Middle School, 2561 Grinstead Drive.

Naloxone is a medication called an “opioid antagonist” used to counter the effects of opioid overdose.  Naloxone is used in heroin and other opioid drug overdoses to counteract life-threatening depression of the central nervous system and respiratory system, allowing an overdose victim to breathe normally.

If you see a pothole on a Metro street or alley in D9, help us get it filled!  Metro Public Works has introduced additional ways of reporting potholes. The new methods are through the Twitter hashtag #502pothole or at a convenient form on the Metro website.  

Reporting a pothole via Twitter is as simple as including the hashtag, along with the exact location of the pothole, in a tweet. In addition, a simple form located at the top of the city’s www.louisvilleky.gov webpage works in much the same way. Users can just click on the form, fill in the location information and click “Submit.” The city receives information from both the #502pothole hashtag and the website form, and issues requests to Public Works to fill the potholes.  Citizens can still call MetroCall 311, but may face long wait times, due to so many people calling. The new tools are being added to the 2016 edition of the annual Pothole Blitz aimed at ridding the city’s streets of the many potholes left by the repeated freeze-thaw cycles of winter.  In the fiscal year which ended last June 30, Public Works filled 171,995 potholes. Eight-five percent of them were filled in the March/April Pothole Blitz.  

Potholes are created by a combination of water that seeps through cracks caused by normal wear and tear in asphalt, repeated freezing and thawing temperatures, and the weight of traffic. Cold temperatures cause the water to freeze and expand, weakening the pavement. The weight of traffic on the weakened pavement then breaks the asphalt, eventually leaving a hole that grows as more traffic goes over it.

Help us improve D9 streets and alleys by reporting potholes today! 

For over a year now, we've been featuring people and activities that help create a sustainable D9 and Louisville.  This week, we are so happy to recognize Mary Brady, a Clifton Heights resident who was named "Member of the Month" by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy for her volunteer efforts in Clifton's Bingham Park.  Here's what Olmsted said:

"Mary lives near Bingham Park in the Clifton [Heights] neighborhood and began volunteering in the park 5 years ago when a group of neighbors came together with the support of the Conservancy to improve their park. The group meets monthly and Mary reports, “It has been a positive experience. I have enjoyed meeting other volunteers who share the same goals.” Mary also supports the Olmsted Parks by being a member. She says, “I support Olmsted Parks Conservancy because I think it is so important to have a good park system and green space for people to enjoy. Keeping up the Olmsted Parks requires funding and that is why I support the Conservancy.  With so much building and development, we need green space more than ever."  http://www.olmstedparks.org/2016/03/5107/

In addition to her activities with Olmsted, Mary is a member of the board of the Clifton Heights Community Council and a regular volunteer in D9 cleanups.  She has already picked out some spots to clean up during the next one, on April 16.  Thank you Mary!

The Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center  closed this week through April 10 for repairs that will include a filter replacement, painting, piping and valve work, installation of new ceramic tile in common areas and cleaning of the restrooms and locker rooms.

The $300,000 worth of repairs and renovations will be completed by contractors working for Metro Parks and Recreation and Parks staff. During the closure period, patrons will have the opportunity to swim and exercise at the Jewish Community Center, located at 3600 Dutchmans Lane.  Mary T. Meagher users are asked to show their ID to JCC staff when using the facility.

March is Meals on Wheels month and again this year I was happy to deliver meals from United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM).  I accompanied volunteer Rosie Scott on her route. Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to seniors all year long, allowing them to live more healthy, happy and independent lives at home.

In District 9, volunteers deliver meals from UCHM in Clifton and the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on Dutchmans Lane.   The support of the volunteers and meals they provide are critical to helping homebound residents maintain enough independence to stay in their own homes, as you can quickly see spending a few hours with Rosie.

In addition to the meals delivered to residences, meals are served to active seniors at more than twenty congregate meal sites across the community, which offer seniors an opportunity for a nutritious lunch, socialization and activities.  Both UCHM and JCC are also congregate meal sites.

Yew Dew Gardens will host a day-long workshop that will feature some of the most knowledgeable tree professionals in the region covering topics ranging from appropriate species and variety selection, care and management and discussions on tree planting programs from around the area. This workshop is designed for everyone from green-industry professionals to developers, municipal managers, neighborhood tree program managers and interested homeowners.  Registration includes a full day of presentations, morning coffee and snacks and a boxed lunch. A follow-up workshop is planned for midsummer at Yew Dell to allow participants to learn tree identification, care and pest diagnosis out in the field.   Advanced registration ($55 Yew Dell Members, $65 Nonmembers) is highly recommended. Registration for the Brightside & Passport Health Plan Spring Community-Wide Cleanup on Saturday, April 16th, is now open. The D9 office will sponsor a team. Volunteers will meet at Bingham Park at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Then at 9:00 a.m. we will fan out throughout the District to clean. The District 9 office will provide bags, gloves, tools and t-shirts on a first-come, first-served basis.

Be a Part of the Re-Use Movement!  Do you have items in your basement, attic, garage or closets and want to donate them to a good cause?  Donate them to the “White Elephant Sale” as a part of the Peterson-Dumesnil House Multi-Family Yard Sale (Sat. April 23 from 8 am - 1 pm at the Peterson-Dumesnil House). Items will be added to the P-D House table and proceeds will go to support the maintenance of the historic home.  To donate items for the sale bring them to the PD House front porch on Friday, April 22.
