Free Naloxone Kits and Training Session to Be Offered in District 7 on April 12

The Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition will offer free Naloxone (also referred to by its brand name as Narcan®) kits and a training session on how to administer it to reverse the effects of overdose from heroin and other opioid drugs and prevent death. The free training is open to the general public. First responders, family and friends of those who use heroin or other opioid drugs are encouraged to attend. The training will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at University of Louisville’s Shelby Campus located at 440 N. Whittington Pkwy. Naloxone is a medication called an “opioid antagonist” used to counter the effects of opioid overdose.  Naloxone is used in heroin and other opioid drug overdoses to counteract life-threatening depression of the central nervous system and respiratory system, allowing an overdose victim to breathe normally.

Paving the Week of March 28

In District 7: Paving crews will continue working on the resurfacing of Old Brownsboro Road from Chippewa Rd. to Pennington Lane. Around Metro Louisville: Paving crews will be working on resurcing the following roads:  Spring Willow Court from Hurstbourne Woods Place to the dead end Essex Rd from Henrietta Ave to Arlington Rd Thames Ave from Essex Rd to dead end Parkshire Ln from Regency Woods Way to 8100 Edgeware Ln Windsor Lakes Subdivision Bruce Ave from Palatka Rd to 3rd St

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Everyone age 50 and over should receive regular preventative colon cancer screenings, but as African Americans are at increased risk, screenings should start at age 45. You may be recommended for screening even younger if you have a family history of colon cancer. If you are of age, you should speak with your doctor about your screening options. 

The Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening Program (KCCSP) works to provide uninsured Kentucky residents with free colon cancer screenings. If anyone would like to talk about their risk for colon cancer or their screening options, please feel free to call Vanessa at the Colon Cancer Prevention Project at 502-290-0288. Screening options include both colonoscopy and a test that patients take home to complete, with no changes in diet and no time taken off from work. Eligible residents who complete their screening through the KCCSP before the end of April will receive a $25 gift card to Thorntons!

Heading to the Beach for Spring Break? Remember these Safety Tips!

We know that many of you will be heading out of Louisville for some much needed fun in the sun this spring break. Here are five key beach safety tips we urge you to consider as you make your way to Myrtle Beach’s sandy beaches this summer: 1.Swim Sober The sad fact is, among adolescents and adults, alcohol use is a factor in as many as 70% of all water recreation deaths. Drinking can affect your coordination and judgment—especially when you’re dealing with sun and heat—and both of those things are key to ocean safety.  2.Know Your Beach Flags Make sure you know what the beach flags that the lifeguards put out mean. A green flag means conditions are calm, a yellow flag means there is moderate surf and/or currents, and red means danger/no swimming allowed.

3.Swim in the Ocean in Areas with a Lifeguard
Myrtle Beach provides lifeguards on public beaches all summer long, and they can be incredibly helpful for much more than just renting you beach chairs and umbrellas. The lifeguards can also help you identify dangerous decisions and can be the key to a happy ending if you or someone in your family gets in trouble in the water.

4.Don’t Swim Alone
Take a buddy with you whenever you go into the ocean.

5.Keen More Than Just an Eye on Kids
Keeping your kids in your line of sight while they swim at the beach is important, but staying close enough you can get to them quickly if there’s a situation is even more important.

6.If You Get Caught in a Rip Current Swim Parallel to Shore
Often, when people get caught in rip currents, they panic and try to swim back to shore as quickly as possible—but that’s a dangerous approach, as it could tire you out as you’re pulled farther and farther out. Instead, swim parallel to shore so that you can get out of the rip current. Once you’re clear of the current, you can swim back to shore much more easily.
