On Thursday March 17, 2016 Councilman David James performed a ride along with a Meals on Wheels volunteer delivering hot meals to Senior citizens in District 6.
Year around the Senior Nutrition
Program works to help seniors stay healthy by providing hot,
nutritious meals. Through the Meals on Wheels program, hundreds of volunteers
helped deliver over 100,000 hot noontime meals last year to qualified
individuals. Another 90,000 meals were served to active seniors at more than 20
congregate meal sites, which offer seniors an opportunity for a nutritious
lunch, socialization and activities.
The Senior Nutrition
Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities,
including packaging and serving meals at one of the congregate sites, and
delivering meals to homebound clients. For more information about
volunteering, call (502) 574-6420. Volunteer drivers are especially
needed for routes in the west and south ends of Louisville. To make a financial
donation to Meals on Wheels, https://louisvilleky.wufoo.com/forms/online-donations/ for Louisville Metro’s secure on-line donation form.
Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years
or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals.
Seniors who would like to receive Meals on Wheels can call (502) 574-6325 to
begin the qualification process. The senior congregate sites for more
active seniors, 60 and older, can be found by calling the same number above or
by visiting https://louisvilleky.gov/government/community-services/senior-nutrition-program.
Sites require a one-day advanced reservation.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month.
Everyone age 50 and over should receive regular preventative colon cancer
screenings, but as African Americans are at increased risk, screenings should
start at age 45. You may be recommended for screening even younger if you have
a family history of colon cancer.
The Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening Program
(KCCSP) works to provide uninsured Kentucky residents with free colon cancer
screenings. If anyone would like to talk about their risk for colon cancer or
their screening options, please do not hesitate to call Vanessa at the Colon
Cancer Prevention Project at 502-290-0288.
You can also speak with your doctor.
Screening options include both colonoscopy
and a test that patients take home to complete, with no changes in diet and no
time taken off from work. Eligible residents who complete a screenings through
the KCCSP now through April will receive a $25 gift card to Thorntons!
You are invited to attend the Economic Development and Community Empowerment
Summit organized by the African Community Agenda Initiative (AAI). The
summit will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, March 25 at the Health and Sciences Hall
at the Jefferson Community and Technical College (JCTC), which is located at
110 W. Chestnut. Participants will need to enter the building between
Broadway and Chestnut.
Louisville
Mayor Greg Fischer will be the lunch keynote speaker. There will be other
state and local officials and community leaders that will participate in the
various panels and breakout sessions.
There
is a full agenda for Friday that is focused on moving Louisville forward. We encourage all those interested in attending to be prepared to
share ideas and engage in frank discussions.
Feel free to share this invitation with your
family and friends. Those interested in attending the summit, can

The fifth annual
Give A Day volunteer week will be held from April 16th through April 24th 2016. This Give A Day is an official Kentucky Derby
Festival event, and kicks off the festival season.
Last year’s Give
A Day Week of Service produced a world-record 166,000 volunteers and acts of
compassion.
This anniversary
year’s projects and initiatives include:
- Return of Build a Bed, an AmeriCorps-sponsored effort that builds beds
for children who otherwise don’t have one. With support of nearly a dozen
local companies, including K&I Lumber, this project provides a bed,
bedding, books and stuffed animals – some of the basics of a good night’s
sleep. Kentucky Gov. Bevin and Mayor Fischer both are creating volunteer
teams to help build the beds on April 16.
- The international WE Day, in partnership with WLKY, is holding a short
Walk of Compassion through downtown as a Give A Day event on April 21. The
public is invited to join more than 3,000 students participating in the
lunch-time walk, carrying signs of compassion. Also, from April 18-21,
people can drop off personal hygiene items at the Kentucky Center; WE Day
students will pack and share them with Kentucky Refugee Ministries and
JCPS’ resource centers.
- The new Louisville data and design studio Kale & Flax is staging a
24-hour session to create – for free – a new web page for the Office of
Safe & Healthy Neighborhoods’ One Love Louisville campaign.
- Students from JCPS, private and Catholic schools are being encouraged
to share their service work with the larger community through a new video
challenge.
Individuals or
groups wanting to find a project should visit www.mygiveaday.com where projects and
needs submitted by local non-profit agencies and other groups are listed.
We urge individuals and companies to also use the website to report their
own community service. If your church or civic group is doing a project that
week, go to the website and let us know about it so it can count toward our new world record.
The Brightside
cleanup April 16th is one of the most popular ways to participate in Give A Day.
Every year, thousands help clean up neighborhoods, schools and parks.
Companies and
organizations of all sizes also will have employee teams in action, including
Humana, Stantec Engineering, Yum! Brands, ComputerShare, Kroger and Walgreens.
Having Give A Day week as the lead-up to the world-famous Kentucky Derby
Festival helps residents remember and plan for the service week each year and
puts Louisville’s caring deeds in the world spotlight.
Putting on
nearly 70 events every year would not be possible without the thousands of volunteers who help make this event the great success that it is.
Bridge
Kids International invites you to a conversation among Louisville’s African, African-American, Caribbean,
and all communities of African heritage. Let’s explore how we might all benefit from
knowing and supporting each other and working together.
