President David Yates has been working diligently with the local and state elected officials as well as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, to fund investments into our area's infrastructure to improve the safety of our local and state roads.

In District 25, 3rd Street Road and Dixie Highway have the highest number of collisions and accidents. At both the State and Federal Level President Yates and his Southwest Colleagues, Councilman Rick Blackwell, Councilwoman Cindi Fowler and Councilwoman Vicki Welch are fighting to fund the Dixie Highway Redevelopment Plan.  President Yates has also been working to fund improvements along 3rd Street Road.

City's External Agency Fund Applications

eaf

Open on February 25

Grants available to social services and arts and creative industry organizations

Louisville Metro Government will begin accepting External Agency Fund applications on Thursday, February 25, 2016 for FY17 (July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017). These General Funded grants are awarded to non-governmental, or "external” agencies, that contribute to the city's cultural, social and economic vitality.

All agencies wishing to submit an application are required to have at least one representative participate in a mandatory orientation webinar.  There will be a live webinar held on Feb. 25 at 10:30 a.m. The session is approximately 90 minutes and will cover eligibility, the application process, and provide instructions for the on-line application. Interested applicants who are unable to participate at this time should contact the EAF team to make alternative arrangements. To register for the webinar, please contact the External Agency Fund (EAF) staff at EAF@louisvilleky.gov and include your name, email address, and agency name.

The grants are available for Social Services programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Department of Community Services (LMCS), and for Arts and Creative Industries programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Department of Economic Development. The External Agency Funds are awarded annually to non-profit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson County that align with the Mayor's and departments' strategic goals.

Applications will be reviewed by two External Agency Fund panels, which include Metro Council members and community members, and those recommendations will be included in Mayor Fischer’s recommended FY17 Metro budget.

For the Social Services Funding Program, qualified non-profits committed to providing services that achieve meaningful outcomes for Louisville citizens in the following key areas are encouraged to apply:

·         Decreasing homelessness

·         Increasing household financial stability

·         Increasing youth, teen, and/or young adult engagement in quality programming; or

·         Increasing access to services and resources for a targeted population.

For the Arts and Creative Industries Funding Program, non-profits committed to providing arts and cultural attractions to the Louisville community are encouraged to apply. Eligible arts and creative industries organizations should demonstrate how a program supports the following primary focus areas of Mayor Fischer's Strategic Plan:

  • Economic development initiatives related to arts and creative industries
  • Creative place making and arts-based programs in neighborhoods that have experienced disinvestment
  • Opportunities for citizens to access and engage with visual, performing and other arts experiences

Louisville Metro Government employs a competitive granting strategy and strives to award funding to agencies that demonstrate measurable positive impact in the community and are good stewards of taxpayer dollars.  Successful grantees will be required to report on their success in meeting goals and outcomes.

The deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 18, 2016 by 5 p.m.

Doing Our Part from the Heart

Since 2007, Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24) has called upon the community to remember the brave service men and women who are still serving our country in some of the most dangerous spots in the world by helping ease their tour of duty in a special way.

“For ten years, my goal has been not to forget any solider in need of our help and support,” said Flood.  “This year along with our sponsors, I am so pleased to announce the community of Metro Louisville will have a chance to honor our brave men and women.”

Valentine’s Day is the official kickoff of the “Doing Our Part from the Heart” Campaign.  Over the next eight weeks, Flood and the community will collect toiletries, snacks and other items to send to our military.  Simple items such as soap, eye drops, bug repellent, candy, and other personal items make a huge impact for troops serving in remote locations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Joining Flood, as sponsors of the 2016 campaign are the Okolona Business Association, the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank, Scheller’s Fitness and Cycling and Jackson- Hewitt Tax Service.  The campaign runs through the end of March.

If you cannot donate items and wish to make cash contribution to help cover the cost of shipping, Republic Bank continues its partnership by setting up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going overseas.  Every package cost $16.75 to send.  Make sure to note on the check “From the Heart” account.

“We are very fortunate to have so many people in our community who help us out with donations,” said Flood.  It shows that we care and again is another reminder as to why Louisville is a compassionate city

LMPD Seeking High School Students to Enroll in Chief Conrad's Youth Police Advisory Council

lmpd

The Louisville Metro Police Department is seeking high school students to participate in the 3rd session of Chief Conrad’s Youth Police Advisory Council.  Applications were distributed to every high school with Metro Louisville, and we’d like to invite your assistance in furthering the interest.

About the Program:

YPAC members meet every other month with Chief Conrad to discuss crime, safety, and the LMPD.  The exact dates for this session are listed on the applications.  Chief Conrad hosts the council meetings with a hot meal and agenda packed with stimulating discussion points to get input from the youth regarding their perceptions.  This information often leads to new initiatives, policy considerations, and educational outreach efforts for teens throughout the city.  Students are invited on optional tours to see how LMPD operates behind the scenes, including Churchill Downs, the Firearms Training Center, Metro Safe, and other areas.

 Applicant Qualifications:

·         High school students who reside or attend school in Louisville

·         Well-mannered and respectful, with a willingness to state opinions and responsible objections in a group environment

·         Self-motivated and able accomplish tasks without supervision

·         Community oriented

·         Able to attend at least five of the six required meetings over a 12 months

Student Benefits:

In addition to the explanation above, students will benefit from interaction with Chief Conrad and other LMPD executives.  Individual and group accomplishments will be publicly acknowledged.  The meeting times and other optional activities can count as service hours for schools.  Active participants can receive letters of recommendation from Chief Conrad for colleges, or other requested purposes. YPAC members overwhelming enjoy the program and cite examples of other opportunities they were exposed to because of this experience.

We are seeking a diverse pool of great applicants who come from various backgrounds, regardless of their knowledge or involvement with Metro Government.  Please consider reaching out to your constituents and encouraging applications from well-suited students.  We will accept about 30 members.  The application deadline is February 26, however an extension may be granted if they simply call or email me.  Submission instructions are on the application.  Applications are available by emailing jessie.browning@louisvilleky.gov.

BBB February Hot Topics

bbb

See the latest scams in BBB’s February 2016 Hot Topics

1. BBB has received several calls about fake government grants. Scammers tell local consumers they are eligible for a federal grant, because they pay their bills on time. All they have to do is pay an upfront fee. This is a scam.

2. A local consumer was told there was a warrant out for her arrest for not responding to ajury summons. The scammer told her to pay $1500 to keep from being arrested. The consumer told BBB the scammer sounded official, but this is a scam.

3. BBB is receiving a lot of complaints about fake tech support calls. Local consumers claim Tech Support America is calling, saying an update is needed or there is a security threat on their computer. The company, which has an F rating with BBB, says they can help by logging on remotely – for a fee! Don’t do it!

4. In a fake check overpayment scam, a local consumer was contacted about putting advertising on his vehicle. The man received a check for $2250 with instructions to keep $250 and forward $2000 to someone who would be sent over to wrap the vehicle. Don’t fall for it!

5. In another fake check overpayment scam, an individual sends charities an email, expressing interest, then sends a 5-figure donation via overnight mail, using a fake check. The person informs the charity it was a mistake and asks them to return $10,000 of the money to cover a medical emergency for a child. If the charity follows through, they lose $10,000.

6. Scammers are impersonating cable companies, telling “loyal customers” they are qualified for a significant discount on their monthly bill. However, to get the discount, you must pay upfront for six months – with a pre-paid debit card. This is a scam.

7. Scammers pretending to be from Social Security are sending out emails offering new features to help consumers monitor their credit and learn whether someone is engaging in unauthorized use of their SS number. This is actually a “phishing” email designed to get you to click on a link, which could install malware on your computer. Don’t be duped!

8. A fake TurboTax email claims to be “verifying” that your account is secure. Do not click on any links. Hover your mouse over the “click here” link to see where the link will actually take you – it could be a fake website where scammers will phish for your personal information.

9. Con artists are posing as the “American Chamber of Commerce.” They call, asking for an employee by name, claiming to be updating the company’s listing in its directory. The scammer begins by asking for basic business information. They are phishing for information!

10. Beware if you post items for sale on sites like Craigslist or eBay. Scammers are fooling sellers with fake emails that appear to be payment confirmation messages. The buyer claims to have sent money through PayPal. You receive an email that appears to be from PayPal confirming the transfer. By the time you find out the PayPal transfer is fake, the “buyer” is gone with your merchandise.
