“Meet with Bill” – TODAY!

State Street. Please stop by with any questions or concerns. You can also call anytime at 574-1109 or email bill.hollander@louisvilleky.gov

Clear Your Sidewalks!

sidewalk

The snow is back and more is coming.  It's a good time for a reminder that clearing sidewalks is the legal responsibility of a property owner or tenant - and it's the neighborly thing to do.  Here is Louisville Metro's ordinance:

§ 97.113 SNOW REMOVAL ... It shall be the duty of all persons and corporations owning or occupying property abutting a public street in Louisville Metro to remove within 24 hours thereafter such snow as may fall on the sidewalks in front of their property. Where the property is unimproved or unoccupied this duty shall devolve on the owner or the agent for the property. Where property is occupied by others than owners thereof, this duty shall devolve on the owner or the tenants and either may be proceeded against for the violation.

The ordinance goes on to state that “Any responsible party failing to comply…shall be subject to the following fines: not less than $25, nor more than $100.”

More and more people are walking in D9.  Let's do all we can to keep our sidewalks walkable this winter!

Yard waste collection suspended due to weather

Due to forecasts of snow there will be no yard waste collection this week in the urban services district of Louisville Metro (the former City of Louisville boundaries). Yard waste collection will resume on January 25, weather permitting.

Sustainability Story: Bicycling for Louisville

B4L

Louisville's neighborhoods are becoming more sustainable and livable thanks to the growth of bicycling.  Last year, Louisville earned Silver status from The League of American Bicyclists.  More about the award is here: http://bikeleague.org/content/bfc-spotlight-louisville

Bicycling for Louisville, a group which works for a bicycle-friendly community, is celebrating the year, and kicking off another one, next Thursday, January 28 from 5:30 - 9:00 pm at St. John NuLu Theatre (629 E. Market Street) - and you are invited.  The event features open tabling time, a talk from Mayor Greg Fischer, brief presentations, music by Appalatin, great company and refreshments.  Read more about B4L here - http://bicyclingforlouisville.org/ - and join the party on January 28!

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge

McGarvey, Marzian at Crescent Hill Library Saturday

Sen. Marzian

It was good to be with a large group at the St. Matthews Eline Library Saturday morning, to hear from State Sen. Julie Raque Adams and Rep. Mary Lou Marzian, as the Kentucky General Assembly wrapped up its second week.  This week, Café LOUIE, a Bingham Fellows project, brings Sen. Morgan McGarvey and Rep. Marzian to the Crescent Hill Library, 2762 Frankfort Avenue.

Each of the Café LOUIE meetings features one or two members of Louisville’s 28-member legislative delegation at library branches within or near their districts. The meetings take place on Saturday mornings from 9 - 10:00 a.m., January until early April. The public is invited to attend and is encouraged to ask questions.

Here’s the complete Café LOUIE schedule.

Restaurants, Others Help D9 Fire Recovery

fire

Early on the morning of January 10, two restaurants in District 9 - the popular SuperChefs and Maria’s Deli - were extensively damaged by fire.  More than 50 firefighters fought the blaze, in very difficult weather conditions.  They were successful in saving adjacent businesses in the Fairfax Avenue center but not much at SuperChefs or Maria’s was salvageable.

Now, other restaurants are helping the owners and their employees.  Steve Coomes of Insider Louisville reported on all of the efforts this week: http://insiderlouisville.com/lifestyle_culture/dining/restaurants-charity-rush-to-help-following-fires-at-superchefs.

You can help by participating in Dine Around for APRON on Feb. 3. That night, more than 50 participating restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to the charity, which was created by the city’s independent restaurateurs to help in such crises.  Apron supporters include owners, servers, chefs and others concerned about our local independent food and beverage service workers. They realize that independent restaurant employees may be susceptible to financial distress in times of crisis.  Many D9 restaurants will be participating.  You can find the entire list here: http://www.aproninc.org/events/

LWC Cold Weather Tips

LWC

As the temperatures drop, it’s a busy time for Louisville Water Company (LWC) crews and customers.  LWC has seen a spike in the number of water main breaks, which happens in extremely cold weather.

For customers, the cold weather can lead to problems with their internal plumbing.  LWC receives lots of calls from customers with frozen water lines or burst lines.  Unfortunately, LWC only maintains the lines that connect to the property. Preventative maintenance can minimize the risk of frozen water pipes.

Please click here to view an infographic that highlights the steps customers can take.  In addition, a video on the LWC website explains how to find and tag the water shut-off valve inside the home.  Knowing the location of this valve is important regardless of the weather, since the valve controls the flow of water into the home.

National Mentoring Month - You're Needed at UCHM!

UCHM mentoring

It's National Mentoring Month and here's a need and opportunity right in D9.

United Crescent Hill Ministries operates an After-School Youth Program Tuesdays through Fridays, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., serving 1st - 9th grade children/youth.

At this time it needs some adult volunteers who could help with:

  1. Reading challenges - reading one-on-one with elementary aged children
  2. Math skills - helping elementary & middle school children/youth with math homework
  3. Arts & Crafts - UCHM has lots of materials and media but needs a volunteer
  4. Social Activities - play a game of ping-pong or pool and help a youth develop social skills.

UCHM is also gearing up for an expanded summer program with weekly themes: Art, Drama, & Music; Cooking & Nutrition; Gardening; Math, Science, & Engineering; Tools & Trades; and more. Many volunteers will be needed during the Camp dates of June 13- July 29.

More about all of this is here. UCHM is located at 150 South State Street in Clifton.  Contact it at 893-0346 or click here: http://www.uchmlouky.org/contactus.php
