The expansion and renovation of the Clifton Kroger at 2200 Brownsboro Road is nearing completion, with the goal of being nearly complete by mid-December. New features will include a "sushi island", an expanded meat and seafood section, a more upscale and modern look to the perishables department, including the bakery and deli, a Murray international cheeses section, olive bar, expanded frozen food section, a beverage bar with coffee and milkshakes and a "brighter and prettier" expanded "Nature's Market" section, featuring healthy foods, a walk-up window to the pharmacy, and a wine and spirits shop at the eastern end of the building.

The store will also feature murals by local artists, featuring local scenes. One will go in the entry vestibule and one near the deli/café. The artists are Annette Cable and Noah Church. Shown here are sneak peeks of the works in progress.

Our last newsletter focused on ways to get rid of all of those falling leaves, with mulching them into the turf the best option, followed by placing them in reusable containers for pickup on recycling day and disposal in paper or compostable plastic bags also being good options. There is another great alternative. Many District 9 residents, including me, compost in our back yards. Composting is an easy way to turn yard waste and food scraps into make-it-yourself fertilizer for use in gardens, lawns and other landscaping. It also greatly reduces the need for haul-away disposal of these organic materials.
Taylor Mayer, who lives in D9's Reservoir Park, and his fiancé, Holly Thompson, created a compost structure almost entirely out of materials (two pallets, bricks Taylor and Holly had laying around, chicken wire found around the neighborhood on junk day, etc.) which were at one point considered garbage or not put to any use. They throw kitchen and yard waste in it. Taylor reports "to the surprise of many, it doesn't smell unless you dig it up a little bit, which you're supposed to do about once a month to let oxygen into the lower section." The compost and other recycling efforts have reduced their garbage to about one kitchen trash bag per week, though some weeks they don't have any trash. The compost will be used for gardening next season.
It's quite a "Sustainability Story", items that would have gone to the landfill are instead used to build a structure that turns other items that would have gone to the landfill into compost for gardening. The University of Kentucky has created a number of publications on home composting, including various kinds of bins and containers. Public Works has begun a comprehensive process of examining all elements of Louisville's waste stream and disposal options in order to create a 10-year Solid Waste Master Plan. The plan will focus on Mayor Fischer’s goal of diverting 90 percent of the community’s solid waste away from landfills by the year 2042.
The planning process will be led by Orlando, Florida based MSW Consultants in partnership with Cascadia Consulting Group (Seattle, Washington) and Abbe & Associates (Alameda, California) under a contract with Public Works. MSW is a management consulting firm specializing in the waste and recycling industry.

For the past several years, the District 9 office has hosted a mobile tax preparation site at United Crescent Hill Ministries, offering free tax preparation to individuals and families under a certain income bracket. Each year we depend on volunteers to help prepare taxes and greet clients at our mobile site. We have a few dedicated volunteers that help us out every year, but we need more! This year we’d like to offer additional tax preparation dates and hope you’ll consider joining our team! If you are interested in volunteering for the 2015 tax season (February-April 2016) please contact Kyle Ethridge at kyle.ethridge@louisvilleky.gov or call 574-1109. The first volunteer training will be offered on December 12. Volunteers are needed to help prepare taxes AND greet clients.
