New Needle Exchange Location Added

In June, Louisville was the first city in Kentucky to start a needle exchange program at its downtown location.   In October, Lake Dreamland Fire Station became the second location to exchange dirty needles for clean ones, get tested for HIV and Hepatitis C, and receive referrals to drug treatment programs. The community site will be located behind the Lake Dreamland Fire Station on Cane Run Road and be open Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

District 1 Welcomes New Development

Over the next 3 years, a $63 million dollar development has been proposed at 4646 Cane Run Road near the Jefferson Riverport.  The complex will include mixed development use, senior housing complex, Boy’s and Girl’s Club and Louisville-based Family Scholar House Inc.'s fifth local campus.

Councilwoman Green Participates in Fire Training

Councilwoman Jessica Green and Members of the Louisville Metro Council got a first-hand firefighter’s experience when they attended fire training earlier this year.  Approximately half of the members of the Louisville Metro Council accepted the invitation from Councilman James Peden (District 23) and Highview Fire Department Chief Dave Goldsmith to participate in an abbreviated fire training class and simulation. 

Celebrating Samuel "Sammy" Moore

Darrell Griffith, Samuel "Sammy" Moore, Derek Anderson and Councilwoman Jessica Green commemorate Mr. Moore's distinguished career.

Samuel "Sammy" Moore had an extraordinary basketball career that included leading Central High School to three State Championships (1950, 1951, 1952).  In that 1952 season he was Most Valuable Player (MVP) in Kentucky’s first integrated high school basketball game, and he played on the first Sammy continued pursuing his love of basketball in college, where he played for the Tennessee State University Big Blue Tigers lettering all 4 years (1953-56) and playing on the first minority team to win a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) title.  After graduating and earning his B.A., Sammy went on to a distinguished career playing professional basketball for the Harlem Globetrotters and Harlem Magicians.

The talent that launched Sammy Moore, to a professional basketball career helped launch his second career, a 45-year span of teaching, coaching, and changing lives.  Sammy loved being a mentor and role model for children.  As a teacher, Moore worked with students with special needs by getting students in wheelchairs involved in basketball. He coached basketball at the Lincoln Institute, Manly Jr. High School, and Noe Middle School where he retired in 2007.

His long list of accomplishments and awards is unprecedented including having the Southwick gymnasium renamed Samuel “Sammy” Moore Gym, in his honor.  In addition, Councilwoman Green had street signs at Louis Coleman Street and Southern Avenue, Southern Avenue and Russell Lee Drive, and 36 Street and Southern Avenue renamed Samuel “Sammy” Moore Avenue. 

Even at 81 years young, Sammy continues to serve as recreation supervisor at Southwick Community Center.   Moore continues to use his influence and connection with young people teaching students by example about expectations and performance. He is an example for all of us.  THANKS SAMMY!

Prevention Not Prosecution Program Aimed at Youth

Councilwoman Jessica Green kicked off her new initiative “Prevention is better than Prosecution” at Kennedy Montessori Elementary School with members of the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The Kindergarten portion of the program is entitled “Cupcakes and Conversations,” and the Fourth grade portion of the program is entitled “Pizza with a Policeman.”  Children will be able to enjoy their favorite treats, while having discussions with law enforcement about the issues that they see in their neighborhoods, and to meet uniformed officers in a non-stressful situation.

“It is critical for children to know that law enforcement is here to protect and to serve us.  I’m hoping that this experience will give students an opportunity to meet officers in a positive setting who may have not had the opportunity to meet them until there was a crisis,“ says Green.
