$16.9 Million T.I.G.E.R. Grant for Dixie Highway!

I am thrilled to announce that the #DixieDoOver Project has received $16.9 million in funding from the TIGER Federal Grant program. The T.I.G.E.R. (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) program was developed by Congress in 2009 to generate economic development and improve access to reliable, safe, and affordable transportation for disconnected communities both urban and rural, while emphasizing improved connection to employment, education, workforce development, community revitalization and other opportunities.

The Dixie Highway Master Plan was commissioned to study the need for improvements along the corridor to help spur economic development and improve safety.

The estimated $35 million project, which currently runs from Oak Street to the Gene Snyder interchange, has already received over $12 million in funding from the state budget to proceed with design and construction.

I have worked tirelessly over the past several years to further the #DixieDoOver because I believe it will be transformative for the Dixie Corridor and Southwest Louisville. So many levels of government and civic organizations have supported this project and worked to build its momentum and I am thrilled to hear that the DH Project has been awarded this additional funding.

Junk Drop-Off This Sunday, November 1st

Citizens are encouraged to take advantage of the city’s free bulk waste and junk drop-off event on Sunday, November 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Waste Management Outer Loop Landfill, 2673 Outer Loop. Now is the time to get rid of bulky items not accepted by regular garbage collection such as appliances, furniture and mattresses.

Residents are asked to separate metal items from other junk. The metal is recycled, saving valuable space in the landfill. Freon will also be properly removed from appliances. Items that will not be accepted during the drop-off event include yard waste (grass, limbs, leaves, etc.), hazardous materials, paint, tires and commercial trash.

The event is in addition to regular bulk waste disposal available throughout the year at the Waste Reduction Center located at 636 Meriwether Avenue. In the year-round service, up to three household items are accepted free of charge during regular operating hours, Tuesday - Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Materials such as oil and lead-based paints, lawn fertilizers, batteries and household chemicals may be taken the Household Hazardous Materials Collection Center, known as HAZ BIN, at 7501 Grade Lane. The center is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is no charge for Louisville residents for HAZ BIN services.

When: Sunday, November 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Leaf Drop Off Location – 10500 Lower River Road

leaf

Louisville Metro residents in Southwest Louisville can dispose of their falling leaves at 10500 Lower River Road (Corner of Lower River Road & Bethany Lane) beginning on Saturday, November 10 through December 5th.

Drop-off will not be available on November 26 and 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. They will be turned into compost and used in mulching projects throughout the city. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

This is the first leaf season since enforcement of an update to the Yard Waste Container Regulation went into effect on January 1st. The update requires that yard waste be disposed of in reusable or compostable containers instead of regular plastic bags.

Where: 10500 Lower River Road (corner of Bethany Lane)

When: Tuesday – Saturday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Last Weekend for Jack O' Lantern Spectacular

jack

The Louisville Jack O' Lantern Spectacular includes over 5,000 professionally carved jack-o-lanterns in themed scenes and set to music along a nearly one-third-mile trail through the woods of Iroquois Park. Because carved pumpkins don’t last forever, the display completely changes every seven days.

Proceeds from the Jack O' Lantern Spectacular benefit Louisville Metro Parks Foundation. The trail is approximately 1500 feet long and may take between 30 to 60 minutes to walk.
The Jack O' Lantern trail is a soft surface trail, and there are a few steep slopes. Staff and volunteers are stationed along the trail and can offer assistance as needed. The trail is appropriate for children, adults, and active seniors. Only service animals are allowed on the trail.
