Heritage Green Apartments

1st Phase Ready

hg

Heritage Green, built in the 1940's as Lynn Acres and still Louisville's largest apartment complex, is getting a major makeover.  On Sept. 9, the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund (LAHTF) revealed four renovated units at Heritage Green on South 1st Street, formerly known as the Americana Apartments.

Underhill Associates, the company helming the $18 million renovation, is planning on 60 newly remodeled units ready for move-in each month. The group already has a 50 person waiting list for this major project located in District 21.  Wednesday's press conference included District 21 CM Dan Johnson where the apartment complex is located and 3 Metro Council members on LAHFT, CW Marianne Butler D-15, CW Vicki Aubrey Welch D-13 and CM Bill Hollander D-9.

CM Johnson says "We are fortunate to have this level of investment in affordable housing in our district.  Many of our residents now have  choices not readily available to them before."

"Hard working families deserve to be able to afford a decent , safe place to live and still have enough money left over for important things like groceries and child care," said Rachel Hurst, executive director of LAHFT. The new complex replaced window air conditioning units with central air, redid kitchen space and added washers and dryers in every unit.

Think Ahead to Leaf Season

The recent cooler weather is a reminder that Autumn is just a few weeks away. That means it's time to plan ahead for Louisville's first fall leaf season under the updated Yard Waste Container Regulation. Most residents adapted well during the grass season to the requirement for yard waste containers that can be reused or composted. Leaf season, because of the high volume of material, will require extra work. More paper bags and/or reusable containers may be needed. But the need for those additional containers can be avoided if you follow our Love Em and Leave Em practices. The key is to mulch leaves with a lawnmower. The leaf mulch can be left on the lawn to act as a soil nutrient. Higher volumes of leaf mulch can be captured in the mower bag for transfer to other containers. Mulched leaves need only a small fraction of the container space necessary for intact leaves. Read more at www.lelelouisville.com

Artists of the Month

Visit their exhibit at Wisteria and talk with them Saturday September 12, 11:00am - 4:00 pm.  Refreshments served.

Mona Cattan:

Owner of Highlands Fiber and Folk Arts, located in Louisville, Kentucky. Cattan has been weaving since she received her first potholder loom at the age of six. She continued weaving in Girl Scouts, cranking out "sit-upons" for camping. At age twelve, Cattan met and was influenced by Master Weaver, Lou Tate, founder of The Little Loomhouse . Cattan has been a weaving and spinning instructor for the Little Loomhouse since 1997. She loves to weave with her handspun yarns which include exotic fibers.

Sylvia Kinsfather:

I had never heard of the Little Loomhouse until I attended their second Spin-a-yarn festival. Stephanie Buzan and Rosemary McCandles took me under their wing and gave me lots of encouragement when I volunteered. I wanted to learn weaving from top to bottom so I took traditional weaving lessons from Sally Moss. As I gained in experience and confidence, I entered a few items in the state fair and won a few ribbons over the past few years. I learned triangle loom weaving from Mona Cattan and I really enjoy it! I feel blessed to have such a wonderful supportive weaving family.
