It was an honor to attend Kentucky Third Congressional District Montford Point Marines ceremony of distinction in honor of Congressional Gold Medal recipients and U.S. Marine Corps certificate of recognition recipients. District 7 is proud to have one of the Marine Corps Certificate of Recognition recipients living in our neighborhood! Mr. Edward Churchill who joined the Marine Corps in the 1940s during segregation.
Recruiting for the Montford Marines began in the summer of 1942. Thousands of African American men, eager to serve, signed up at recruiting offices. The first black recruits received basic training at the segregated camp of Montford Point which is in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The 1,200 men were housed in prefabricated huts.
