Working with Public Works to address the worst roads in our area, this budget session Councilman Yates helped lead the charge on ensuring more funds are appropriated toward paving.
Councilman Yates is proud to already see these funds at work in Southwest Louisville and District 25. Stonestreet Road at the I-265 exit ramps to Pond Station and to Blevins Gap Road was paved this week. These exits see heavy traffic from both neighborhood traffic and commercial trucks. Councilman Yates will work to see more of our tax dollars are returned to Southwest Louisville.
Louisville Metro Council passed a Resolution this evening supporting the National Association of Counties (NACO) Stepping Up Initiative to Reduce the Number of People with Mental Illnesses in Local Jails by a unanimous vote. This initiative encourages public, private and nonprofit partners to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses in our local jails.
An estimated 6,000 individuals booked (22% of the total) into Louisville Metro Corrections annually receive treatment for a mental illness. The cost to house adults with mental illness is two to three times more than those not receiving treatment. Currently, staff dispenses 70+ different medications daily for inmates with a mental illness. Without appropriate treatment and services, people with mental illnesses continue to cycle through the criminal justice system, often resulting in tragic outcomes for these individuals and their families.
"Housing mentally ill adults in our jails is a disservice to our community,” says Councilman David Yates (D-25). "It is important that we help these individuals seek the proper treatment and support to become productive citizens once they re-enter society. It is imperative that Louisville Metro, as a geopolitical leader, share this experience with our neighboring counties to the benefit of our entire region.”
Because of the potential positive economic impact on the budget, and since public safety is nearly 60% of the total Metro operating budget, the business community understands the issue and is supportive of the Resolution.
Since the 1980’s, Law enforcement agencies have called upon the citizens of Louisville Metro and all over the country to join with them by getting involved in fighting crime. It begins with a chance to come together with police officers to learn more about protecting themselves and their families as a community.
On Tuesday night, the LMPD’s Third Division will host National Night Out at the Home Depot, 6849 Dixie Highway beginning at 6:00pm.
This community event is also a fun night of entertainment for the whole family. There will be activity booths, an obstacle course and bouncy booth for kids, face painting, and much more.
Home Depot, Louisville Gas and Electric, Target, McDonald’s, the Southwest Regional Public Library, Dairy Queen, Dixie Bowl and LMPD 3rd Division Police Advisory Board are also sponsors of the event.
For more information, on the LMPD Third Divisions National Night Out, call the Division at 574-2155.

A timeline has been established for a project that will improve the landscape and access to the North Overlook in Iroquois Park by Spring 2016.
Louisville Metro Parks & Recreation and the Olmsted Parks Conservancy met with officials from EZ Construction, Inc. in late July and determined that construction will begin the week of August 10. According to EZ Construction, the general contractor for the project, work is expected to be completed within six months of the start date.
Vehicular traffic from Sullivan Grove to the current North Overlook will be prohibited. The Corbly Trail, which leads to the North Overlook, will also be closed. Those wishing to access the overlook during the construction period must do so only via the roadway by foot or bicycle from the Sullivan Grove Trailhead/parking area. The gate to the hill will be open and closed as normal this summer and fall, and will be closed, as it typically is, during the winter months. Due to construction, access to the actual Overlook itself will also be prohibited.
The $1 million project’s cost is being funded by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy and Louisville Metro Parks & Recreation. It will include rustic stone sitting tiers with views of downtown Louisville and the Indiana Knobs, enhanced landscaping, improved access to trailheads and wheelchair-accessible paths to the North Overlook.

LG&E is improving the reliability of the natural gas service
in the PRP and Riverport areas. In order to slowly increase the natural
gas system pressure in your neighborhood, LG&E technicians need to
inspect the natural gas service lines and meters to each home and
business. This inspection ensures the integrity of the system.
If you are in the impacted area, you will receive a letter
outlining the project. This work will run between August 3 through
October 1.
If you have any
questions, please call 502-627-4427 or e-mail gas.regulatory@lge-ku.com

 It
seems like every day there is a new data breach. The latest involves more than
10,000 current and past Louisville Metro Government employees whose personal
information may have been compromised. The breach involves names, home and
email addresses, birthdates, and social security numbers. Here are tips from
the BBB on how to protect yourself from a data breach:
-
Monitor your accounts
regularly. Check every charge on your
statements: Scammers often test cards with smaller charges before racking
up large bills. Confirm each charge on your account line by line.
-
Call your bank: Tell them you were a customer at the breached
institution. If your card was affected, the bank might contact you first
to issue a new card.
-
Sign up for alerts: Most banks allow customers to set email or text alerts
for transactions over a set value. Notifications make it easier to keep
tabs on your account.
- Accept or enroll in free
identity protection services that breached companies offer you: This
has become standard practice among breached companies.
-
Request a 90-day fraud alert: If your Social Security number was stolen in a breach,
ask the credit bureaus to put a note on your file so creditors know to
further verify the identity of any individual who attempts to open new
accounts or take other actions under your name. Notify one of the three
major bureaus — Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion, and it will tell the
others. This is not as effective as a security freeze.
-
Get a security freeze: A freeze will put your information on lockdown, meaning
the credit bureaus can’t give it out without your permission. In the event
that your Social Security number was stolen, it’s another worthwhile
precaution. A security freeze will not impact your credit score or impair
your ability to use your existing credit cards. It locks down your credit
reports that are used to determine your credit worthiness. When on a
freeze, opening new credit will require some minimal advanced planning. To
be effective, a freeze must be set up with all three credit bureaus.
Experian: https://www.experian.com/freeze/center.html;
Transunion https://freeze.transunion.com;
Equifax: https://www.freeze.equifax.com.
-
Check your credit report – for free – up to three times a year (once from each
credit reporting agency) at annualcreditreport.com.
