National Night Out Celebrations – Tues, Aug. 4

NNO

Once upon a time, we kept our porch lights on. We opened the door even if we didn’t know who rang the bell. And we could always leave the back door unlocked during the day. National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. Together, we are making that happen. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

To celebration NNO, the 1st and 5th Divisions will be hosting events on Tuesday, August 4. Join the 1st Division from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Waterfront Park on the BIG 4 Bridge Lawn. There will be free food, drinks and giveaways, along with many specialized vehicles and units on display (SWAT, HNT, Bomb Squad, Air Unit flying in to land on the Waterfront etc.).  The First Division includes Portland, Russell, Downtown, NULU, Phoenix Hill and Butchertown.

Join the 5th Division from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Peterson-Dumesnil House Lawn, 301 S. Peterson Avenue. This event is fun for all ages. Activities include free food, music, expired drug toss, door prizes, child ID cards and more!

Sustainability Story: Biking to Work

Dan Hillary

I met Dan Hillary on Louisville’s Bike to Work Day and learned that Dan bikes to work every day.  Dan and his wife live on Frankfort Avenue in Clifton and Dan bikes to his job downtown, where he works as an actuary at Humana.  He is at work in 12-15 minutes, carrying his work clothes in his backpack.   He avoids traffic jams and enjoys the ride and, of course, Dan’s commute is pollution free.

Dan got into biking while attending graduate school in Illinois.  Since moving back to Louisville two years ago, he’s noticed more acceptance of bicycles and cars sharing the road and an improved public perception of bicycling.  During that time, Louisville has moved up in the ranking of bicycle-friendly communities, recently achieving silver status.

To learn more about biking in Louisville, visit the Metro Bike Louisville website: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/bike-louisville

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge

Lexington & Grinstead Monument Damage

Lexington/Grinstead

If you’ve noticed damage to the concrete and stone monument on the northeast corner of Lexington Road and Grinstead Drive, here’s the story.  Early on the morning of July 12, a car travelling east on Grinstead ran a red light at Lexington and crashed into a crosswalk signal pole and the monument.  There was a witness to the incident and the driver was charged with driving under the influence.

Metro Public Works is in the process of getting estimates to repair the monument and making a claim with the driver’s insurance company to cover the cost.
