Metro Council Passes Fiscal Year 2016 Budget

This is my first time going through a Metro Council Budget process and I have learned a great deal through this process about the intricacies of our City’s Government.

The budget contains expenditures of approximately $891 million, of which $212 million will be spent on capital projects. The budget calls for Metro to have a combination of about 5,988 full and part time employees making up approximately 68% of the expenses associated with this budget.

Public Safety
During the FY16 budget hearings, members of the Metro Council were able to question and discuss the purchase of body cameras for use by Metro Police and Corrections Officers. This budget approves $2.8 million for the purchase of these cameras. This budget also addresses replacement vehicles for Police, Fire, and EMS. In addition, members also approved funding for three new police recruit classes and the hiring of three new prosecutors to deal with narcotics and domestic abuse.

Public Assets
Roads: As an engineer I am especially proud that this budget takes on the serious infrastructure needs of this city. In total, the amount allocated to road paving and improvements will increase from $6 million in FY15 to nearly $13.4 million in the FY16 budget.
