completed 1,025,643 production hours without a lost-time incident
CLERMONT,
Ky. (April 6, 2018) – Labor Cabinet Deputy
Secretary Mike Nemes visited Beam Suntory in Clermont today
to present a Governor’s Safety and Health Award for the 1,025,643 production
hours worked without a lost-time incident by employees.
“On
behalf of Gov. Bevin and the Labor Cabinet, I would like to congratulate Beam
Suntory in Clermont on earning its second Governor’s Safety and Health Award,”
said Labor Secretary Derrick Ramsey. “Working over one million hours without a
lost-time incident is no easy task, and I think this award represents that kind
of safety culture that exists at Jim Beam. Bourbon is one of Kentucky’s
signature industries, and I’m proud our distilleries are looking out for the
employees who are the very foundation of its success.”
Established in 2014, Beam Suntory is the third largest global
producer of distilled beverages with 4,440 employees worldwide. Headquartered
in Chicago, Beam Suntory is a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings Limited of Japan. Currently,
Beam Suntory has 448 employees at its Clermont facility.
“Employee safety and product quality is our number one priority
across all of our operations, so I couldn’t be prouder of our team here in
Clermont and the work they’ve done to earn this prestigious honor,” said Beam
Suntory Chairman and CEO Matt Shattock. “Our team also recently filled the 15 millionth
barrel of Jim Beam since Prohibition, an industry first. That we’ve been able
to achieve one million hours without injury in the face of such incredible
growth, really demonstrates the safety-first mindset of this tremendous team.”
“I congratulate the men and women of Beam Suntory for setting and
acting on such excellent standards for their workplace and employees,” State
Sen. Dan Seum (Fairdale) said. “This award is well-deserved, and I look forward
to this company’s continual success in one of Kentucky’s signature industries.”
“Jim Beam’s employees deserve to be commended for this
accomplishment, so I want to thank them for their dedication to workplace
safety,” State Rep. Linda Belcher (Shepherdsville) said. “I also appreciate Jim
Beam’s leaders for giving their employees the tools and training they need to keep
them protected on the job. They’ve all set a great example for other companies
to follow.”
The Kentucky Labor Cabinet presents the Governor’s Safety and
Health Award to highlight outstanding safety and health performance in
Kentucky’s workplaces. A business may qualify for the award if its
employees achieve a required number of hours worked without experiencing a
lost-time injury or illness. The required number of hours is dependent upon the
number of employees.
According
to a recent report from the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Kentucky employers reported the lowest
incident rate for nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in the state’s
history.
Based on a mathematical calculation that describes the number
of recordable incidents per 100 full-time employees, Kentucky’s rate improved
from 3.7 in 2015 to 3.4 in 2016, reflecting the latest available data. This
rate has steadily declined since it was first calculated in 1996, when a rate
of 8.4 was reported.
