The first Basic Training Academy class to incorporate statutorily required online training, Class 548, will begin Dec. 27, 2023. This memo outlines what agencies can expect and provides information to prepare recruits to attend basic training under the new hybrid model.
KRS 15A.070 was revised in July 2022, requiring that: “By no later than January 1, 2024, at least ten percent (10%) of the total hours of course instruction required to be completed for basic training under KRS 15.440(1)(d) be made available electronically and online for candidates to complete through remote learning.”
The new Basic Training curriculum is 806 total hours of law enforcement training; of which 90.5 hours must be completed online prior to arriving at DOCJT in Richmond. The remaining 715.5 training hours will be conducted in-person.
Recruits will have approximately four weeks to complete the 90.5 hours of online training. They will be notified via email when their online training opens. The online courses will close before in-person training begins.
All 90.5 hours of online training must be completed prior to arrival at DOCJT’s campus in Richmond for the in-person portion of basic academy.
It is imperative that adequate time and attention be devoted to the online training. Recruits will be guided through the curriculum and time on screen will be monitored. Failure to complete online training will result in rejection from in-person training.
Testing covering the materials presented during the online training courses will be conducted upon arrival to the training academy.
