NEW Professional Learning Module: Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse
The Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse module is intended to provide guidance in the successful implementation of equitable academic discourse, supporting the three-dimensional student learning called for in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Science. This module contains materials to be used in professional learning sessions at the district, school or department level.
Supporting Student Sensemaking with Equitable Discourse utilizes an open educational resource to provide participants with a learning experience symmetrical to the classroom. Through that experience, the participants are immersed in equitable academic discourse to see what it looks, sounds and feels like as a learner. This module is divided into five sessions. Within each session, participants are encouraged to plan their next steps for implementing equitable academic discourse.
The goals of module are to:

Establish a learning environment where all students have equitable access and opportunity to learn through discourse;

Develop a collaborative understanding of equitable academic discourse that supports student sensemaking;
-
Explore how both teachers and students contribute to equitable academic discourse;
-
Examine why we should use equitable academic discourse in the science classroom; and
-
Intentionally plan for equitable academic discourse.
The Kentucky Department of Education is partnering with Educators‘ Professional Implementation Center (EPIC) Numeracy Alliance to offer a 2-year professional learning academy for K-8 math teachers and the instructional leaders who support them, funded by the Kentucky Numeracy Counts Act. Goals of the EPIC Numeracy Alliance include:

Deepen conceptual understanding of critical math concepts for teachers and leaders;

Develop skills and habits of mathematics teachers, leading to meaningful change in evidence-based instructional practice;

Increase teacher self-efficacy in delivering grade-level content; and
-
Engage in continuous improvement, build collaboration skills and capacity, and share responsibility among teachers and leaders for improving learning for all students.

Registration Closes Friday! Register now for the Kentucky Reading Academies: Cohort 3 of LETRS Professional Learning
Registration for the third Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) cohort of the Kentucky Reading Academies will be open from May 1, 2024, through August 30, 2024.
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has an exciting partnership that brings the LETRS professional learning to educators across the Commonwealth, called the Kentucky Reading Academies. This course of study was chosen because of its demonstrated success on a national scale in bringing significant increases in literacy achievement.
The Kentucky Reading Academies is a comprehensive no-cost professional learning opportunity open to all K-5 public school educators. Over 4,000 Kentucky educators and administrators are participating in the LETRS professional learning opportunity.
Two different courses are being offered through the Kentucky Reading Academies: LETRS for Educators and LETRS for Administrators. Interested educators can join the Kentucky Reading Academies by registering for the course that pertains to their role:
LETRS for Educators Cohort 3 Registration: This course is recommended for K-5 teachers, interventionists, reading specialists and anyone providing reading instruction or intervention supports to early readers.
Please NOTE: Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 participants will not need to register for Cohort 3, as they are already enrolled in the professional learning.
