Attorney General Cameron Announces Historic $13.9 Million to Fight Opioid Crisis
FRANKFORT, Ky. (October 2, 2023) – Attorney General Daniel Cameron continues his unprecedented opioid recovery efforts. Today, in conjunction with the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission, he announced $13.9 million in new funding to help organizations on the frontlines of the opioid epidemic. With today’s announcement, more than $32 million has been awarded for opioid prevention, treatment, and recovery programs this year.
“From holding opioid companies accountable to restoring hope in our communities, my office is taking actions that prior administrations failed to take,” said General Cameron. “I am grateful to the Commission for its good work and confident that this new funding will help build a safe and healthy future for every Kentucky family.”
The $13.9 million awarded today will expand access to evidence-based treatments and resources, as well as support community health centers, rural organizations, and emergency shelters. Earlier this year, General Cameron announced the award of $18.5 million for similar projects.
Since 2019, Kentucky’s drug epidemic has been escalating. Overdose deaths are up 60%. In the last three years alone, we have lost 7,665 Kentuckians to overdose.
General Cameron has secured over $800 million from the companies that contributed to such deaths. These dollars have not only funded the Commission’s work but also will deliver hundreds of millions of dollars directly to Kentucky’s counties and cities. No attorney general in the Commonwealth’s history has secured such significant relief for opioid recovery.
