Attorney General Cameron Joins 16-State Coalition In Filing Amicus Brief in Support of the NRA
FRANKFORT, Ky. (December 23, 2020) – Attorney General Daniel Cameron today announced that he joined a 16-state coalition in filing an amicus brief supporting the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) lawsuit against the New York Attorney General. The NRA’s lawsuit seeks to halt New York’s attempt to dissolve the organization.
In August, New York’s Attorney General filed a lawsuit in New York state court seeking to dissolve the NRA. Subsequently, the NRA responded by suing the Attorney General in New York federal court, claiming that the dissolution lawsuit violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments by seeking to punish the NRA for its constitutionally protected Second Amendment advocacy.
The NRA is the country’s leading Second Amendment advocacy organization, and the coalition argues that New York’s lawsuit to dissolve the NRA will undermine Americans’ constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
“For nearly 150 years, the NRA has advocated for the Second Amendment rights of citizens across the country and given their membership a platform to advocate for policies consistent with these rights,” said Attorney General Cameron. “New York’s lawsuit threatens the constitutionally protected work of the NRA and, if successful, would greatly diminish the voice that Kentucky’s NRA members have in the process. The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental constitutional right, and we’re going to fight to protect it.”
Attorney General Cameron filed the amicus brief alongside attorneys general from Arkansas, Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.
