Livable Neighborhoods aims to improve the quality of life in our Wyandotte County community through organized neighborhood and government partnerships that provide information, training, resources, and a forum for open discussion.

Monthly Community Meetings

Join Livable Neighborhoods Task Force for our monthly meetings to learn about community programs and available resources, get updates from various Unified Government departments and other public municipal agencies, and hear announcements from community members and organizations.

When: The 4^th Thursday of every month, January to October
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Location: In-person at the Neighborhood Resource Center or via Zoom

Doing Something Good Our neighbors in Parkway Village rolled up their sleeves and got to work beautifying the median strip at the entrance of their neighborhood.  For years, the median served as an eyesore to residents, but recent communication with a nearby bank inspired residents to "do something good" and improve their neighborhood's physical condition. Who knew a little greenery could go a long way? Thanks, neighbors, for all that you do to better our Wyandotte County community!

Are you a WyCo neighbor wanting to get involved with your local neighborhood group and live within the following area: N: Greeley Ave.     S: Parallel Pkwy. E: N 83RD St.    W: N 85TH St. Parkway Village Homeowner's Association meets the 2ND Tuesday of every month at 6 PM. Join them for their October meeting on  October 8th, 2024 at the Parkway Village Clubhouse (8342 Greeley Ave.) Questions? Each month, Social Health Labs awards $1,000 to support a community project that aims to achieve one or more of the following goals: Foster friendship and connection Strengthen neighborhood bonds Build community cohesion locally Bridge interpersonal and intergroup divides Reduce social isolation and loneliness Do you have an idea to improve social health in your neighborhood? Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Lead is a heavy metal that can be found in the air, soil, and dust around us, and the paint of some homes or buildings built before 1978. Exposure to lead can cause serious health problems. Fortunately, lead poisoning can be prevented. The Wyandotte County Public Health Department offers the kNOw Lead KCK program to qualifying homeowners and renters to assist with lead abatement efforts.

Test Your Home for Radon Radon is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that comes from the breakdown of naturally occurring uranium found within soil, rocks, and groundwater. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. High quantity of radon impacts 1 in 4 Kansas homes. Wyandotte County's K-State Research & Extension offers low-cost kits for $15 that can be shipped or picked up in-person.

Donate Blood, Save Lives! The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage. The Red Cross' national blood supply has fallen by more than 25%, and blood donors of all types, especially those with type O blood, are urged to give as soon as possible to help patients receive lifesaving medical care. Come to give in August and receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email as a thank you. Reach out to your local Red Cross to host or sponsor a blood drive in your community!

Volunteer Opportunities

Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) provides a treatment-based alternative to veterans to receiving "standard" sentence or diversion for their legal circumstances by offering intensive mental health and substance abuse treatment and services through the VA.

VTC's Veteran Mentors bridge the gap between “Legal Requirements” & “Treatment Needs”---assisting participants navigate the course as there will be challenges along the way.
 
The Mentor must be respectful, empathetic, and dependable while not being friend, counselor, or therapist.
 
There is a time commitment involving a bi-weekly courts appearance with participants and aiding as a “resource” so as to reduce stress that can easily be caused by distractions of life.
