Elder Abuse Education

Elder abuse is a common form of financial exploitation, often committed by a trusted individual. Senior citizens can easily fall victim especially if the person being targeted is isolated. Help protect consumers by watching for common signs of abuse, such as:
- Forging a signature to steal real property, money, and possessions
- Making financial decisions or purchases that are uncharacteristic of the consumer
- Influencing the transfer of a deed, will, or power of attorney to the scammer
- Using an elderly person’s property or possessions without permission
- Promising companionship in exchange for money and gifts
- Tricking the consumer into sending money to a fake financial institution
If you believe a licensee is involved in a scam, file a complaint with the Real Estate Commission. The Commission has authority to take disciplinary action against a licensee, including imposition of education, fines or suspension, revocation, restriction, condition, or censure of a license.

Employee Spotlight
Michael T. “Tim” O’Brien is a real estate specialist and investigator with the Kansas Real Estate Commission since August 2023. After serving with the U.S. Marine Corps, Tim attended Wichita State University and graduated from the Wichita Police Academy. He then served 28 years with the police department as an officer, field training officer, detective, and patrol Seargent. During this time, Tim obtained a real estate salesperson license in 2012 and selected sites for developers. After retiring from the Wichita Police Department in 2020, Tim worked for J. P. Weigand’s commercial division until joining the KREC team. Tim resides in Wichita and has two adult children who also live in the area. He volunteers as a coach at a local university and enjoys reading, fishing, rucking, and spending time in the gym both for himself and to train others.

Compliance - Contact kreccompliance@ks.gov for questions related to required duties of a real estate licensee, brokerage relationships, activities requiring a license, and reporting requirements. To file a complaint, click here.
Administrative - Contact kreclegal@ks.gov for questions related to a received Commission Directive or Warning Letter, to request a hearing on a Summary Proceeding Order, check the status of an Open Records request, or to make a payment on an assessed Fine or Returned Payment fee.
