Mystery Unveiled – How a Compliance Review Works
Lynn Comfort | Real Estate Specialist/Auditor
Have you ever wondered how a compliance review works? The following is a short overview of the process.
- An email will be sent to a supervising broker along with a REC-550 – Compliance Review Questionnaire.
- The supervising broker will complete and submit the signed and dated questionnaire by the date requested in the notice. All areas of the REC-550 must be answered and include the transaction log or list, if there have been transactions. Licensees need to ensure paperwork is submitted to the broker timely to ensure the broker has all transaction information.
- From the information provided, the supervising broker will receive an email request for specific files.
- The Commission will review the requested documents and additional information may be requested.
- Notice will be sent to the supervising broker by email with the findings of the review.
- An exit interview will be conducted with the supervising broker to discuss the findings and answer questions.
- A warning letter, commission directive, or summary proceeding order may be issued if the Commission finds violations of law during the review. Discipline or a warning could be assessed to an affiliated licensee along with the supervising broker.
Did you know? Staff are working on 20-30 reviews at a time. Please be patient as we’re giving ample time for all to respond.
Back to School – Education Reminders
Amber Nutt | Director of Education and Communication
As the kids head back to school, it’s a good reminder to also plan for your own continuing education (CE) classes. Take the time to find topics that interest you and don’t wait until receipt of a license renewal reminder to register for courses. Over 600 approved classroom and distance education courses are available from multiple schools. Check the Directory of Approved CE Providers and Courses to find a delivery method best for you. Only those listed are approved to offer CE to Kansas real estate licensees for credit.
When registering for a course, provide the school with your accurate Kansas license number and name to help ensure CE credit is applied to your record. Licensees can verify information and view completed CE hours for the current renewal cycle by logging into MyLicense E-Gov. CE hours for past renewal cycles are not displayed and license renewal is available 45 days prior to your license expiration date*.
Salespersons and brokers must complete 12 hours every two years to renew, including at least three mandatory hours in an approved course titled "Kansas Required Core." Licensees often try to renew their license and are surprised to find they haven't completed all required CE. Commonly, licensees forget to complete the Kansas Required Core. This is a specific course that must follow an outline approved by the Commission. A course titled “core” in other states does not count for mandatory credit in Kansas and the Code of Ethics course is not required by the Commission. If you do complete a Code of Ethics course, it may count as elective credit toward your license renewal with the Commission if it is on the approved CE list.
Have a comment or complaint about a course you’ve completed? Click here to provide KREC with feedback to assist in better meeting the education needs of real estate licensees.
*Please note, if you submit your license renewal online before you have met the CE requirement, your renewal will be placed on hold and the system will attempt to process it for seven days. If you complete all CE more than seven days after submitting the online renewal, you must notify KREC at krec@ks.gov to ensure your record is updated and/or provide course certificates. You will receive a printable pocket card via email from KREC within 48 hours of renewal being completed.
Coming Soon! New Licensing System
The state of Kansas has awarded the enterprise license system contract to Accela. KREC staff are currently participating in tailoring meetings and expect to unveil the new licensing system in Spring 2024. This new system will further streamline the online licensing offerings for Kansas real estate licensees.
