Happy 75th Anniversary to KREC!
KREC was established by the Kansas Legislature on July 1, 1947 with the enactment of the Kansas Real Estate Broker's License Law. The enactment of licensure brought benefits to licensees, consumers, sellers, and buyers of real estate.
In August 1947, the Commission issued the first license to David Neiswanger of Topeka. Currently, Ralph Anderson Jr, of Topeka, is the longest active licensee; he received the 67th license in 1965. At that time, the fee for a license was $15. Spencer Finney, father-in-law of the first female governor of Kansas, Joan Finney, was the first director of KREC. The early Commission consisted of six members. In January 1981, the frequency of renewal periods switched from every year to every two years. Until July 1987, only eight CE hours were required for renewal.
Renewal ledger used by KREC until 1980 to record a licensee’s yearly applications for renewal.
From the Executive Director
Erik Wisner
The Kansas Real Estate Commission is charged with protecting the public in the selling, purchasing and leasing of real estate through administering a program of licensure, education, and compliance relating to the transacting of real estate by salespersons and brokers in Kansas. The Commission understands your ability to effectively manage your license 24/7 is a key component in that process.
Although we have improved our online offerings over the last five years we still have not entirely automated the initial license application process and continue to have issues with users changing their affiliation online. Earlier this year the Legislature, at the request of the Commission, approved spending funds to seek a new vendor to replace our legacy licensing system. Our goal is to have a new system in place by June 2023 that will be user friendly and allow for almost all interactions with the Commission to be done via our online platform. We expect little to no impact on customer service while we transition to the new system. If you have feedback on the process or ideas to improve online offering do not hesitate to let us know via email at krec@ks.gov.
About Your Commissioners
When accepting the role of regulator, commissioners must make difficult decisions. It is a position that carries a great deal of responsibility with minimal compensation. We are grateful to our commissioners, current and past, for all they do to give back to the real estate industry.
Five members are appointed by the Governor and serve staggered four-year terms or until a replacement is appointed. At least one commission member is a public member, meaning they have never held a real estate license. At least three commission members must have held a Kansas broker license for a minimum of five years prior to appointment. There must be at least one member from each of the four congressional districts.
The public member brings the perspective of the community to the Commission and is not expected to become an expert in the real estate industry. The industry members provide their real estate expertise, but also serve to protect the public interest. Below are the commissioners currently serving.
Natalie Moyer Chair, Licensee, 4th Congressional District, Wichita
Jacqueline Kelly Vice-Chair, Public Member, At-Large, Wichita
Marsha McConnell Licensee, 1st Congressional District, Hays
Bryon Schlosser Licensee, 2nd Congressional District, Topeka
Clarissa Harvey Licensee, 3rd Congressional District, Kansas City
