Safe Routes to School initiative kicks off with open house
City and KDOT staff joined the Newton High School soccer games Tuesday night and had lots of people stop by, connect, take the survey, receive a free helmet and fitting, and share their ideas for making it safer and easier for students to walk, bike, and roll to school.
If you were unable to make it:
Thank you to everyone who participated and be on the lookout for more opportunities to get involved in October!

Newton represented at REAP Gubernatorial Candidate Forums
City Commissioner Jason Miller represented Newton at recent REAP gubernatorial candidate forums, which were held in response to member requests for opportunities to hear directly from the candidates for Kansas governor. The forums provided South Central Kansas leaders with an opportunity to hear from both candidates through presentations, moderated questions and informal conversations.
During the forums, Miller discussed issues important to Newton and the region, including airport development, continued housing growth, infrastructure needs and property tax policy. REAP brings together local governments and regional partners to address issues affecting South Central Kansas and provide opportunities for local leaders to engage on statewide priorities.

Coffee, connections, and good times served by NPD
Coffee with Cops was a great opportunity for Newton officers to step away from the day-to-day and spend time connecting with community members. Officers served up drinks, treats and plenty of smiles while enjoying conversations with the people they serve.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, ask questions, share a laugh or simply say hello. These informal opportunities to connect help strengthen relationships between our officers and the community-and we always enjoy seeing you!

2026 Holiday Helpers fundraising underway
The Holiday Helpers tradition brings local first responders together each year to help make the holiday season a little brighter for families across Harvey County. From packing boxes to delivering food, the program is made possible through teamwork, generosity and community support.
Holiday Helpers is working toward supporting 250 local families, and community donations are an important part of making that goal possible.
Donations can be made at the Newton Police Department or Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, 120 E. Seventh St., Newton. Checks should be made payable to First Responder Holiday Helpers.
Every donation makes a difference, and sharing information about the program helps spread the word. Together, we can help make the holidays a little brighter for families in our community.

Friendly competition & funny faces for HR Professionals Day
HR Professionals Day gave our Human Resources team a great excuse to step away from the usual meetings, spreadsheets, and daily to-do lists and spend some time simply getting to know the people they work alongside.
The HR team put their music knowledge to the test with a friendly competition featuring everything from finishing lyrics and guessing songs to identifying artists. And, of course, the competition didn’t stay within HR for long! City staff from across the organization joined in to lend a hand.
Some knew the lyrics. Some knew the artists. And some were very confident but totally off the mark!
More than anything, the activity was a chance to laugh, connect and learn something new about the people who help make up our City team. If you have Facebook, you can view the video here on Saturday morning.
Happy HR Professionals Day to the people who help make our workplace more than just a place to work!
Homecoming parade sees big turnout for Railer Nation
Newton’s Homecoming celebration was a great reminder of the community spirit that makes our town special. From Newton Police helping lead off the parade to Newton Fire/EMS joining in the celebration, our city teams were proud to be part of an evening centered around Railer Nation.
But it wasn’t just the parade participants who made the night special. Families, friends, neighbors, students, alumni and community members came together along the route to cheer, wave and show their support. There’s something special about seeing familiar faces gathered together, sharing in a tradition that brings a little extra energy and pride to our town.
Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make Homecoming a memorable community celebration!
