Chief Roberson and his wife, Robyn, in the aerial platform truck.
Last ride home for Chief Roberson
After nearly 32 years of serving Newton, Chief Steve Roberson’s career with Newton Fire/EMS ended with a fitting tradition: a ride home in a fire truck.
But before that last ride, friends, family, and members of the Fire/EMS family, past and present, gathered to celebrate a career that has meant so much to this community. There were stories shared, plenty of laughs, a few emotional moments, and a whole lot of appreciation for a chief who has spent more than three decades serving his hometown.
A career like that leaves a mark, not just on an organization, but on the people who have had the privilege of working alongside you and the community you've served.
Congratulations on a job well done, Chief Roberson. Newton is grateful for your years of service, leadership, and dedication.

Newton hosts Fall 2026 AAKC Conference
Newton was proud to host the two-day fall conference of the Administrative Assistants of Kansas Cities & Counties (AAKC) this week – full of good info, great connections, and even some laughs!
The conference brought administrative professionals from cities and counties across Kansas together for training, networking, and sharing ideas that help strengthen local government and the communities we serve. A special shoutout to our own Administration Assistant Aubrey Wallace, who coordinated and put together this year’s Fall AAKC Conference. Her work helped create a great opportunity for fellow municipal professionals to connect while also showcasing a little of what makes Newton special.
We’re glad to have welcomed AAKC members to Newton and to be part of a statewide network dedicated to learning, collaboration, and better public service.
Community voices help in shaping safer Newton streets
Thank you to everyone who joined us at last week’s Transportation Safety Action Plan open houses! We appreciate everyone who stopped by, asked questions, shared ideas, and engaged with the data and proposed improvements.
Your feedback will help shape the draft plan, which will be available for review later this fall. Another round of community engagement is tentatively planned for October, with the goal of bringing a final plan to the City and County Commissions for approval by the end of the year – stay tuned!
Thanks for helping us work toward safer ways to get around Newton and Harvey County.
September is Responsible Pet Owner Month
Our pets are family, and keeping them safe and healthy is a big part of caring for our community. Newton Animal Control Officer Lyndsey Robinette works closely with Caring Hands Humane Society to provide education, resources, and support for pet owners.
Whether you’re looking for local pet services, information on responsible pet ownership, or answers about Newton’s pet-related ordinances, we’ve got resources to help.
Taking care of our pets is a community effort, and when we work together, we can help make sure our four-legged friends get the care they need while keeping Newton a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

The last full day to splash and play is Monday, Sept. 7. After that, the Splash Park will be closed for the season beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8.
So grab the swimsuits, round up the kids, and squeeze in one last day of splashing, playing, and making those summer memories before the season wraps up!
When wildlife visits your neighborhood
Today is National Wildlife Day, a great opportunity to recognize the wildlife that shares our Newton community. From deer and foxes to raccoons, opossums and skunks, these animals are a part of the local landscape.
If a healthy wild animal wanders into your yard or neighborhood, the best approach is usually to give it some space and let it move along. Newton’s Animal Control Officer may assist when wildlife is sick, badly injured or poses a danger to people.
For other wildlife concerns, contact a pest control company or the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Wichita Regional Office at 316-683-8069.
Learn more about Animal Control and wildlife information here.
 Safety starts before the emergency
The work of Newton Fire/EMS extends beyond responding when someone calls for help. Through community risk reduction, we work to identify risks, educate residents, prevent emergencies, and build a safer community.
Community fundraising through the Newton Fire/EMS Foundation supports efforts including fire prevention and safety, code enforcement, investigations, public education, community paramedicine, and plan reviews.
During September’s Match Month, your support can go even further. Thanks to the Patterson Family Foundation, donations receive a 50% match throughout the month as Newton works toward the $100,000 match goal.
Together, we can support the work that helps keep our community safe – before, during, and after an emergency.
