NPD shares helpful tips for "Stop on Red" Week
As part of "Stop on Red Week", the Newton Police Department encourages drivers to stay alert and remember that a green light doesn't always mean it's safe to go.
Before entering an intersection, look left, right, and left again, then check the crosswalk. Someone may still be finishing their crossing, whether it's a parent with a stroller, an older adult, someone using a wheelchair, a cyclist, or a child walking or riding to school.
Traffic signals tell us when it's our turn, but taking a few extra seconds to look beyond the light can help prevent crashes and keep everyone safe. By staying aware of the people around you, you can help ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.

Supporting prevention, education, and recovery in our community
At its July meeting, the Newton Substance Abuse Board awarded three grants to local organizations that provide substance abuse prevention, education and treatment services in our community:
- Prairie View
- Mirror – Prevention
- Mirror – STAND
The seven-member Substance Abuse Board is appointed by the Mayor and administers liquor tax revenue received from the State of Kansas. Those funds are invested back into Newton through programs that support education, prevention and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse.
Thank you to these organizations for the important work they do to strengthen the health and well-being of our community!
