City retiring Newton Connect mobile app
The City of Newton is retiring its mobile app in September and replacing it with a web-based citizen request system.
The webpage at www.newtonkansas.com/report has the same functionality as the app – reporting issues like potholes, code violations, park problems, etc.
The service is being migrated to the City’s iWorq software system to streamline operations. The City also uses iWorq for permitting, code enforcement and Public Works workflow.
Utility customers can schedule bulky item pickups at www.newtonkansas.com/bulky.
The app will no longer be available for download in app stores beginning Sept. 1. For those who already have the app, it will remain on their phones but will no longer be functional.
2027 Budget Preparations
The Newton City Commission continues its work to finalize the 2027 budget and has scheduled an additional work session next week.
The meeting will be held at City Hall and is open to the public. It will also be livestreamed and available for later viewing on the City's YouTube and Facebook channels.

The Commission will consider a not-to-exceed budget at their meeting Aug. 25, and will hold official public hearings on Sept. 8. If you have input about the 2027 budget, feel free to contact City Commissioners.

City staff and NPD officers connect during SEAK this week
This past Tuesday, City staff and Newton Police officers spent the afternoon at Peace Connections' Summer Enrichment Activities for Kids (SEAK) program, joining kids and families for yard games, laughs, and plenty of friendly competition.
These moments are more than just fun, they're a meaningful part of the Newton Police Department's commitment to community policing and the City's efforts to connect with community members. By spending time with kids and families in positive, everyday settings, staff have the opportunity to build relationships, earn trust, and create connections that extend far beyond a single afternoon.
A big thank you to Peace Connections for creating opportunities that bring neighbors together and help make Newton an even stronger community.

Building and Project updates
- Design work continues on the Sand Creek Bike Path Extension. City staff recently completed a project review with KDOT, and the next set of plans will be submitted to BNSF Railroad for review in August.
- The City Commission awarded a contract to repaint and rehabilitate Newton's two spheroid water towers, helping extend the life of this critical infrastructure.
- Infrastructure work continues in Harvest Pointe Phase 2, with sanitary sewer installation complete pending final testing and storm sewer construction now underway.
- Work continues on the South Spencer Roadway Rehabilitation project, where crews are preparing the roadway base before paving begins.

 Springlake Splash Park still open until Labor Day
Looking for a way to beat the heat? The Springlake Splash Park is still open and ready for visitors! Bring the family to cool off, then spend some time enjoying the nearby playground.
As a reminder, the splash park operates through the summer and is expected to close around Labor Day weekend, so be sure to enjoy it while the season lasts. When you arrive, simply press the top of the green activation post or move one of the water cannons to start the water features.
City of Newton on the hunt for an Environmental Intern
The City of Newton is hiring an Environmental Operator-in-Training Intern to work alongside experienced Public Works professionals, helping maintain and protect the City's water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.
As an intern, you'll gain real-world experience by:
- Working both indoors and outdoors
- Learning laboratory and basic microbiology skills
- Exploring water treatment, wastewater, stormwater, and water distribution operations
- Assisting with equipment maintenance and infrastructure inspections
