City seeks proposals for Depot District redevelopment
Earlier this year, the City Commission approved an option contract for the historic Newton Depot, allowing time to evaluate the property, explore redevelopment opportunities, and consider it alongside the former Dillons property at 320 N. Main as part of a broader vision for the Depot District.
Since then, the City has continued refining that vision using community feedback gathered through the Newton Next Comprehensive Plan workshops.
The next step is now underway. The City has officially released a Request for Proposals (RFP), inviting developers to envision the future of the Depot District. The RFP encourages creative concepts that preserve the area's historic character while creating new opportunities for residents, visitors, and businesses.

Celebrating 15 years of the Meridian Event Center
The Meridian Event Center celebrated its 15th anniversary last Saturday with an evening of great food, live music, dancing, and community celebration. Guests enjoyed the debut of the Grand Meridian Buffet, live entertainment by The George Sanders Blues Band, and a champagne toast honoring the venue's past, present, and future.
Throughout the evening, attendees reflected on the countless weddings, celebrations, meetings, and community events that have taken place at the Meridian Event Center since it opened in 2011. The milestone celebration also recognized the dedicated employees, partners, clients, and community members whose support has helped make the facility a premier destination for gatherings in Newton.

Custard with Cops benefits Special Olympics Kansas
This week, the Newton Police Department partnered with Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers for Custard with Cops, a community initiative benefiting Special Olympics Kansas through the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Throughout the evening, community members had the opportunity to meet local officers, enjoy frozen custard, and support a meaningful cause. We were also honored to have several Special Olympics Kansas athletes join us, proudly showcasing their incredible medal collections and sharing in the fun with our community!
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended, freewill donations and a portion of Freddy's sales during the event will help fund year-round sports, health, leadership, and inclusion programs for Special Olympics Kansas athletes.

City of Newton on the hunt for an Environmental Intern
The City of Newton is hiring an Environmental Operator-in-Training Intern to work alongside experienced Public Works professionals, helping maintain and protect the City's water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.
As an intern, you'll gain real-world experience by:
- Working both indoors and outdoors
- Learning laboratory and basic microbiology skills
- Exploring water treatment, wastewater, stormwater, and water distribution operations
- Assisting with equipment maintenance and infrastructure inspections
- Building a strong foundation for a future career in Public Works
